Ok, I promise this is the last you will hear from me about Gray, Sale or Archer being unrealistic. I won't even post an "I told you so" in 3 months haha.
Indeed. Plus the entire set of circumstances were different.
The org hadn't officially admitted that they were going into full rebuild mode during the Lester FA extravaganza. If suited the Braves, because they could say he's a Georgia boy and could've given them a front line starter. Lester went along, just in case there was a slight chance of them ponying up the money. Worst case scenario from his perspective was that he got wined and dined, a tour of Turner Field, a few phone calls from players...and assistance at driving up his bargaining position.
Now they're targeting somebody, whom they've expressed previous interest in and presumably shot out some names. The Nats might be checking in just to try and prevent the Braves from getting him. It's always possible that somebody else could present a more favorable offer to the White Sox, but these discussions seem to be serious.
You can take out kind of and it would fit my stance.

Per the book "The Arm" they offered Lester. The author was given full access to Lester's process. IIRC they were not w/i 25 million of the winning bid but they offered and Lester really wanted Atlanta to win per the book.
Archer is probably even more valuable than Sale despite being a lesser pitcher because he is controlled longer at an even lower salary. Add to the fact that the Rays will almost certainly not sell low on their most valuable asset coming off a disappointing season, and I don't see Archer as a serious candidate either.
Great. They probably really want Sale too, but will be $25M in trade value short in this endeavor too.

The Braves are also among the most serious bidders for catcher Jason Castro, as they look at the available catching.
I have reason to believe Enscheff will be happy today.

I agree.. I hope Coppy is aggressive but smart. Don't start giving away multiple high end assets that are one tendon tear away from wasted. That goes for any pitcher on the market.
There is no doubt the Braves have the ammo to get Sale. There is also no doubt Coppy is smart enough to throw out many proposals he considers a win for the Braves in hopes that one might stick.
I am going to continue to assume Coppy is smart enough not to "go all in" on a team projected for 74 wins, and further assume the ChiSox are smarter than the DBacks and are able to properly value Sale.
I think they have a group of guys they're willing to trade from and they're shopping it around to see who will bite. That's not a bad plan. I have my ideas on who is in that group

I really like the idea of adding Castro to a platoon with Flowers.
I don't think we'll get Sale, but one thing that increases the likelihood is if we knew he'd sign a pseudo extension..He's vastly underpaid with 3 years left on his deal. There's a chance he could be open to adding on 2-3 years at market price. Maybe a team could tear up that 3/38 contract he has left and offer him something like 6/125. The reason you don't go after free agent pitchers is you only get a few good years and overpay. This could be a situation where it's worth it....if you knew he and his agent were open to that kind of deal.
