2016-2017 Off-Season Thread

I wish I had their crystal ball. If I know one thing about baseball it's that it's predictable, maybe we should just give the rings to the team with the most projected WAR. I bet they win the world series every year.

So what's your plan? Let our gut tell us how good the team will be?

Put the best team on the field they can and see what happens without mortgaging the future. Son far they have done that with signing 2 innings eater starters on short term deals. I don't want any Tex trades but if we can make a smart deals for an ace I am okay with it. We don't know what it's going to take for a lot of these trades to happen. How much it costs depends on a lot of things and the Braves have positioned themselves with a lot of leverage. We don't have to trade for Sale. Maybe another team blows their load on Sale, that's just more leverage for Archer or Gray.

Personally I would look into signing Chapman. I know people will hate on that but I think he is as good a bet to produce as anyone even if he is overpaid for our team. If we can keep it at 5 years the money will be negligible because it we have a lot of cash to spend in the next 5 years. If we want to be a championship team I want Chapman closing out playoff games. I would also try to break Sims and Newcomb into the majors as 2-4 inning relievers.

I think we could also add during the season at the trade deadline. See how things go and go from there. I read a fangaphs article saying we could trade for Sale and Archer without trad I ngs anything off track ML roster and not be within 10 games of a playoff spot. That's just ridiculous. I don't know which players will suddenly have big years but we have too much talent for a few of them not to. Where's Bill Shanks hen I need him. It's not all.about plugging in stats in a spreadsheet. Who can predict things like Gary Sanchez doing a Godzilla stomp through the AL last year, Francoeur's rookie season, or a random scrub like Charles Thomas having a good year out of nowhere.

Well there ya go. If Dave said it then it must be true.

I'm not sure why he'd say the Padres though. The Padres did a good job of completely overhauling their farm system in the last two years. I think they're much further along than they were.

The D-backs were idiots. So the net effect is don't be an idiot.

I agree.

The problem with the D-Backs wasn't necessarily going for it too soon. I think the problem lied more with that they didn't really deal from their positions of strength. If you have a Carlos Correa manning SS currently, you can afford to trade away an Alex Bregman.

The Braves have a steady pipeline of pitchers. They should feel comfortable including 2 or 3 of their top pitching prospects if it brings back an ace. Obviously including multiple high end position prospects and/or Inciarte isn't a wise move considering our needs and our lack of depth in quality poisonal prospects.

I don't want to give up a pick for a RP...that said. I'd look hard at it if I could get a short term deal or some team options.

Chapman, Viz, JJ shortens the game a ton. You have another premium arm in Cabrera. You have some unhealthy but premium arms in Winkler, Simmons, Paco. You have Minter close. Krol is solid. That would allow us to really shorten the game with a lot of young pitchers coming up on pitch counts (18, not 17 with Colon and Dickey). It would also allow you to make a big trade at the deadline if someone want to go Chapman or Miller-esque on the trade market.

Chapman's domestic violence may limit his market and may have many fans who do not want him on their team.

Chapman is going to be given $90M-$100M over 4-5 years.

I know rosterbation is fun, but maybe we can stay within the realms of reason haha?

Or not. Carry on!

We fly with Garcia and Ruiz at third, Peterson and Chase d'Arnaud sharing second, Frenchy is our backup OF, Williams Perez at SP5 (until Gant and Ellis are ready) and Tyler "The Golden Arm" Flowers splits time behind the dish with D-Back retread Tuffy Gosewisch.

That's rosterbating with a nasty fat tranny granny.

Braves system is/was alot better than SD/Arizona but if they did get Sale, it would depend what would be traded.

And i dont think you can potentially trade for him and not try to add a big bat as well.

One thing to consider is that the Braves will have a top 3 pick... so will likely replace any one stud we trade away in June.

Ignoring the gutting of the farm briefly (it's the offseason after all)... If we were able to swing a deal that included Sale and Frazier, is it inconceivable for us to be not only competent, but good next year?

Rotation
Sale
Teheran
Dickey
Colon
Folty

Lineup
Inciarte/Mallex
Dansby
Freeman
Frazier
Kemp
Markakis
Flowers/Castro
Jace/Albies

Seems like a good team... although the defense on the corners would be dreadful.

I don't know what it would take to get both Sale and Frazier (I imagine a lot)... but I think if we did, we'd be right back into legit playoff contention.

Are you a believer again my friend?

No.

But it doesn't take a huge leap of logic to see that emptying the farm could get us back to being good.

The Shelby Miller trade saved the rebuild, if you ask me... without it, we'd be in some trouble.

I can see that. It certainly helped push the time line up at the very least 1 year. Otherwise there is still a crazy amount of talent in the organization. It's just really young.

Yeah the #5 pick could add Houck to the system and would replace Newcomb or whoever else is traded. So having another big draft next year has to play into their thinking some. Newcomb, Albies, Mallex, Riley, Fried, and maybe Wisler would be probably close to what it would take to get Sale and Frazier. Would y'all be ok with that? I personally would. That would leave Allard, Soroka, Anderson, Wentz, Muller, Touki, Maitan, D Peterson, Demeritte, Acuna and others including who we draft in June. That still leaves us a very strong minor league system. And if Frazier walks next year then we offer him arb and get the pick.

Hard to argue with that unless you believe that smith can come close to his overall value.

Ender could be the centerpiece of any deal considering what his value is currently.

It's a gamble, but a good one. I do believe Mallex can replace Inciarte. A bit different skillset, but yes, I do.
