2016 Draft Position

Cincy won. We're in sole possession of 3rd pick. If Colorado wins tonight, we leapfrog them into 2nd. :tchop:

We're tied with Colorado now, but yeah, they obviously still have a game to play.

We're going to lose 100 and will probably get the top pick. Just a matter of time.

We might lose 105. Hart has really warmed to the task. As have our formerly competitive young pitchers.

Didnt realize how close Atl was to 1st overall.

Col up 3-1 at the moment.

I did some research on the top prospects and it does not look great. This will be a deep draft but it seems no clear number 1 player this year. So no superstar.

I disagree. This link is a little dated, but it is Kiley McDaniel's Early Look at the 2016 MLB draft. One of the comments made in this article is this:

After talking to some sources that have seen most or all of these top 5 players, this seemed like the cutoff for the elite, potential strong 1-1 choices and you could put them in almost any order. For reference, there is maybe one of those players in the 2015 draft crop, so to already have at least five (and you could argue for another five that I identify below) this early in the process, particularly from the prep side, is a great sign for the top of this draft class. I’ll be a little more brief in my notes for the rest of the top 30. 5/10/15 UPDATE: The elite group is now a top 7 as two as the guys that just missed the top group (Puk and Tyler) took a big step forward in the weeks after I posted the list.

So, when you are looking at a draft that has what is considered to be 7 elite prospects, I wouldn't call it a draft that does not look great. Not at all. And this ranking did not include Jason Groome, who has risen to become probably the top high school prospect in the draft with his summer performances.

Basically, if Atlanta lands the top pick, it is all about Jason Groome and Riley Pint, the top two high school prospects available.

Yeah this draft is supposed to be really good, especially the pitching. Right now I am on HS CF Blake Rutherford's bandwagon. I really like the idea of adding an elite bat in the draft to go with Maitan who we can sign in July. That would give us our best pair of hitting prospect since Chipper and Andruw.

I generally prefer going HS early in the draft, but with a top 1-2 pick, I'd rather go with a college guy if one emerges.

He's a great prospect, but I prefer taking the pitcher high and getting the bat later.

I would rarely take a college player in the first two rounds of the draft. IMO, you definitely do not take a high floor/low ceiling college guy 1/2.

I didn't say high floor/low ceiling. I'm talking Stephen Strasburg, David Price, Gerrit Cole, Kris Bryant, etc. That's why I distinguish the top 1-2 picks. If there's a guy like that there, I want to take him. If not, go with highest upside.

But the biggest advantage of a top pick is not necessarily that you just get the top talent...it's also potentially getting elite talent with less risk than normal. Those guys don't ever last past the top 2-3 picks.

I'm not talking Mike Minor.

Hopefully, a hitter emerges who we just can't pass on. I do like the pitchers in this class, but we desperately need an elite hitter in our system.

If we do get the top pick then we still have a whole high school season for a big time hitter to emerge. Can't believe we are this close to a #1 pick lol.

I think this will be the first of two or three top 10 picks.

Yeah this draft is supposed to be really good, especially the pitching.

It is deep, not great.

This is what I was reading: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/ask-ba-mix-go-1-2016-draft/

"There is no clear, slam-dunk top draft prospect like there was when Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper were readying for their final amateur seasons.

There’s not really even someone such as lefthander Carlos Rodon, who was putting a stamp on the top of the draft two summers ago with a dominating outing against the Cuban National Team."

We do have a few candidates that we can pick from, but it seems no elite talent.
