2016 Trade Deadline Rumors and Moves

Don't love Shanks but he's got a point: Alex Wood, Bronson Arroyo, Jim Johnson and Jose Peraza for Matt Kemp, Zach Bird, Paco Rodriguez and Joey Wentz looks a lot better.

Taking just Hector Olivera's $28M out of $54M Matt Kemp is owed, #Braves could potentially have Kemp for $8-9M per from 2017-19 (age 34).

Hmmmm. That makes the difference $26M rather than $46M. Which number is correct?

Isn't he forgetting about Avilan? Key to the deal!

My guess is the Padres may use the money to ink Myers to a long-term deal.

Olivera isn't going to play another game for the Braves. He's a sunk cost. If we don't trade him we almost certainly release him.

So option one is we release Olivera and pay him the 28 million we owe him.

Option two is we trade him for Kemp (assuming we pay everything of Kemp's). That means we owe $7 to $8 million more a year according to Grant McAuley on Twitter.

So looking at it that way, we gain Kemp for $7-8 million a year. It's possible that if we're willing to eat the amount of Olivera's contract we could find a taker for Kemp at that rate and get a useful prospect back.

So compared to releasing him, getting Kemp for Olivera is a benefit to the team.

You are paying about 12 million more per year additional for the privelidge of a declining 1 war player that counts as 20% of the payroll.

Instead of a woman beater hitting .125 in AAA and he's only 20% of the payroll because we are under budget by about 40-50 million

Here's my Excel table. Formatting is TERRIBLE, but shows how I get to the $42m difference.

2016 2017 2018 2019 2020
Kemp (Paid by SD) 6.196721311 18 18 18
Kemp (Paid by LAD) 1.204918033 3.5 3.5 3.5
Olivera 1.37704918 6 6.5 7.5 8.5
6.024590164 15.5 15 14 -8.5 42.02459016

This doesnt sound right, but it would make it less dreadful. There is a reason the pads are getting rid of him for a guy they may cut. Why dont we just cut olivera? Kemp isnt going to be a productive member of a contending team.

Somebody posted that Olivera's contract is a "sunk cost." Good thing we can all check in to discover new & unique perspectives!

Thanks. I look forward to enough data to understand how that gets reduced to $7-8M per year.

Really? No place for a .250 to .270 hitter that can hit over 30 homers?

Got a feeling Coppy may flip Kemp to an AL team this winter provided the deal happens.

Still not a big fan since I'm afraid Kemp won't be very happy and could be a problem in the clubhouse. That said, that's probably going to be less of an issue than Olivera presented.

At least we got right-handed protection for Freeman without having to give up prospects OR a big contract.

Tough to see this as much other than another solid move by Coppy IMO.
