2016 Trade Deadline Rumors and Moves

He had a .755 OPS last year and is hot right now so it's a little better. But I expect he'll end up about the same, which doesn't impress me much since so much of it is taken back with his defense.

Ehh not too upset if we are getting rid of Olivera. Would also be nice to see a second decent hitter in the lineup with good defense everywhere else

Yeah, I know on his SSS LF numbers are pretty bad. And odds are he sucks close to just as bad there, though his has been slightly less terrible this year in RF than usual. Like I said, I wouldn't expect anything amazing, but I'd much prefer this move than some others we could do given that I don't think we are ready to compete for real until mid 2018 or early 2019.

The word is that shifting and so forth by the Padres has helped him and some of their other poor defenders not look so bad this year. I believe it after seeing them turn Upton into a plus defender in left field this year. He had like 9 DRS there for them after looking bad there as well as in CF previously.

If we can trade Hector "Waste of Space" Olivera and get Kemp, I don't care if we don't get any money back. That's a great deal.

Apparently several players have told the front office they don't ever want Olivera back in the clubhouse.

I agree. If Kemp is only payed like a bench player or just a little more. Then sure I'd do that for Olivera. But I am not adding any good prospects in any deal for Kemp because he is high risk of further decline and dead money if so. Not to mention how terrible he is on defense. He's a DH in the outfield anywhere you put him. Hopefully we can move Markakis if this deal goes through as we don't need both corner spots lacking so much range and no arms too.

Guessing that the choice is between a straight up trade, or we send a prospect in return for some cash. (no source... just speculation).

But Olivera costs way less and can be stashed away. Kemp is due 60 mil over the next 3 years which will be a huge drag on the team.

Interesting. Either way, I'll be fine with it as long as we aren't paying him too much more than the 30 mil we owe Olivera through 2020. Olivera is sunk cost anyway, and having Kemp could prevent us from making a dumb move for a LF before we are ready. I see it as a nice preventative measure that could double as a nice PR move for casual baseball fans that don't realize how bad Kemp's defense is as we move into the new stadium.

Of course, we need to remember that the players made the same gripes about Escobar, which helped bring about the trade that netted us the great Alex Gonzalez. I've always been of the school of thought that players should just shut up and play.

I'm glad we got rid of Escobar

Personally I hope we don't have to see many of our current players in the locker room much longer

Olivera isn't going to play another game for the Braves. He's a sunk cost. If we don't trade him we almost certainly release him.

So option one is we release Olivera and pay him the 28 million we owe him.

Option two is we trade him for Kemp (assuming we pay everything of Kemp's). That means we owe $7 to $8 million more a year according to Grant McAuley on Twitter.

So looking at it that way, we gain Kemp for $7-8 million a year. It's possible that if we're willing to eat the amount of Olivera's contract we could find a taker for Kemp at that rate and get a useful prospect back.

So compared to releasing him, getting Kemp for Olivera is a benefit to the team.

Wonder how many players said that when Bobby Cox punched his wife? Excuse me, allegedly punched his wife.
