2017 Opening Day Roster Taking Shape

Jeff Passans latest. Mentions us being in on Quintana still, but lacking "star prospects" the Astros have to pull it off.

Jeff Passans is wrong, we are not lacking the "star prospects" to pull it off. It's just a matter of whether or not we'll give them up. This is why I posted in the Acuna thread: "If not traded, I'd predict that is quite likely given his talent." Further, I am not saying this to advocate trading Acuna but to say he will be among the package I'd ask for if I am the White Sox, etc. My position is to keep Acuna and only trade for Quintana if you can get him with a package around other top prospects such as one headed by Newcomb. I am fine with trading prospects, even top prospects in the right deal. But some I am not trading include Acuna, Albies and Fried. The White Sox likely ask for all three and if so hang up the damn phone!

It's not Passan's opinion. That's what teams are telling him.

OK "a number of evaluators" he asked are wrong here: "Atlanta, for all of its interest, might not be the best fit. While the depth of their farm system is enviable, a number of evaluators do not see as many high-end prospects in the Braves’ system..."

People get so butt-hurt over this statement, but it's fine. I go with several high-quality guys and a plethora of depth over one or two "star prospects." I think they're referring to a Clint Frazier-type guy in return -- and though Swanson would constitute that kind of haul, he's barely a prospect and wouldn't be traded.

I bet Ozzie gets there if he is 100% healed well.

It's not that we don't have them. If we offered Swanson plus more they would likely do the deal. It's just that we don't want to give them up and for me that wouldn't change if we had more.

Not a huge fan of Quintana and it's going to take a pretty significant offer to get them to budge. I really hope we are out on him. Let our own guys progress this season and see where we stand at the end of the year. If Folty, Wisler, Blair, Newcombe and others don't appear likely to be big contributors in 2018, then you make a trade for an Ace.

I personally feel like Newcombe and Folty will be headlining our rotation by year's end. Hopefully Wisler and/or Blair can turn the corner and be the mid rotation pitcher we need them to be.

Teheran/folty/Newcomb /Fried will be in the rotation next year. It's about finding that fifth starter.

Probably Touki or Weigel. Our farm system is stacked.

I know you're joking because you put Touki in here. We will bring in a fifth starter from the outside and just let Wisler/Blair/Sims/Weigel/etc... fight to show they can be in that spot. As of now though I believe the top 4 spots are internally locked up.

They should be or this rebuild is really behind.

I agree. If we aren't seen a playoff ready team by 2018 then its time to start criticizing the front office.

By the middle of 2018 we should see the following:

C - Lucroy (Hopefully)
1B - Freeman
2B - Albies
SS - Swanson
3B - Rodgriguez/Ruiz
LF - Kemp
CF - Inciarte
RF - Acuna

SP - Teheran
SP - Folty
SP - Vet
SP - Fried
SP - Newcomb

RP - Johnson (underrated IMO)
RP - Cabrera
RP - Minter
RP - Krol
RP - Clouse
RP - EOF (Why not?)

That team looks pretty good to be but also subject to large variation because of their youth.

We have a bevy of upper minor arms that can fill out that bullpen. I expect us to deal from strength there moving forward, likely at the deadline.

I would be surprised if we traded for an Ace honestly, I figured that's why we traded for all these arms. In order to have a young controllable rotation and pen at bargain bin prices.

I think if the White Sox are looking for major league-ready talent, we probably come up short of what they want for Quintana unless Swanson would be the centerpiece of the deal. I just hope we stay away. Like Carp said, let's let things play out a bit.

thethe, am I missing something? Is that Alex Rodriguez or the late Aurelio Rodriguez you have penciled in at 3B for next year?

That would be Sean sir.

Also, why am I not as excited about Quintana as others. My guess is he is available still because nobody values him as the non expert baseball comunity. Otherwise, why would the sox still have him? It's very risky to hold onto a pitching asset if the ultimate intention is to trade him.

Thanks. I had totally forgotten that we had sunk almost $6 MM per into him. I'm not counting on much from him. Obviously due to the accident this year, but I've never seen him as being all that good. If we are counting on him for a big contribution, we won't be contenders.

Because he's young, cheap, under control for a long time and they don't have to deal him. The exact same reason we didn't trade Julio when we weren't offered the moon. He's quietly been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the past 3 years. That being said, the two guys I don't dare trade are Fried and Acuna.

I'm betting on that SP vet being Lackey on a 1 year deal.

This looks like one of the hypothetical rosters that the 20 year old kids post here. You're old enough to know better.

By 2018, they should be ready to contend. Teheran is not going to be #1 ace. He'll be a really good #2. So when they decide that they're going to be serious, they're going to have to pony up to bring somebody else in from the outside by either trade or free agency. Obviously depending on asking price.

Yes, could see Acuna at one of the corner OF slots with Markakis gone by that time. Positive that the bullpen will look radically different from just graduated prospects. Some of those prospects are there for trade. So there will be new faces 15 months from now. Hell, the roster will look quite a bit different by the end of the year than it does from Opening Day.

Lucroy (hopefully not). EOF? - they'll need to end that association by that time!
