2017 TOP 30 PROSPECTS: UPDATE IN PROGRESS

sample size alert...

Weigel has 18 SO, 12 H and 4 BB in 14.2 IP.

If (big if), he's getting a bit more control and that walk number coming down is real, this guy might be #1 before the year is over.

I don't see any way he climbs that high. He absolutely could fly up boards, but you still have guys like Soroka and Allard doing similar things at a much younger age.

So....Where would Wright and Waters rank on our top 30 as it is now?

I put Wright 6 ahead of Anderson and Newcomb and Waters 22nd

I threw it in the draft thread, but I went....

Albies
Acuna
Soroka
Allard
Newk
Wright
Maitan

But I admit that might be too low on Wright.

If Wright comes in at a 60 fv, then he is probably #2

Waters if a 50.. would be 15 -20 probably.

I wouldn't put him ahead of Acuna or Soroka, at least initially. Fangraphs had Acuna as a 55FV before the season, I don't see how that wouldn't be bumped up to a 60FV if they re-did that list right now, he's just got a rare set of tools, everything is above-average to plus; and as a postitional player he's a little safer than a pitching prospect.

Soroka has been too good this year at AA to ignore, maybe he still doesn't project to have better stuff than Wright, but he's another guy that if you re-did the FVs right now, he would have to take a jump up. The peripherals at AA are outstanding for anyone, let alone a 19 year old.

I think moving Wright up past Allard does make sense.

Albies
Acuna
Soroka
Wright
Allard
Newk

Certainly can see putting him ahead of Allard/Newk though.

right.. but they won't update those guys yet. So Wright will just be wedged in.. and if he comes in at 60, then he has to be at #2.. I agree on Acuna and Soroka. Both are potential 60 guys.. Weigel might move to 55 too..

and that top ten for the Braves after this draft will be insanely good. I expect Newk to graduate before they do mid season updates, but we could have 9-10 guys on there still.

Wright is likely the best pitcher in the system, but the case can be made for Allard being above him. I could be convinced Wright is #1 in the system if someone was concerned about Albies a bit, and wasn't completely sold on Acuna's inflated BABIP.

Waters falls at the top of the FV 40 group of players, ahead of guys like Minter and Cumberland, but below the older role player FV 45 guys like TD and DPete...probably around 18-20. A young FV 40 with his tools has a chance to rocket up these rankings in the next couple years though.

Top 10:

Albies
Wright
Acuna
Maitan
Allard
Soroka
Newk
Anderson
Gohara
Pache

I might flip Maitan/Allard though. Regardless, the group of untouchables just grew to 6 guys last night.

or how an elbow injury might cause a slight down tick in hit tool to start.

And he is coming off yet another DL stint after fouling a ball off his foot. It will likely take a week or so for him to get back into it, and his stats will suffer even more.

He's still the same guy though. It's just prospect fatigue. I fully expect the "TD is better than Albies" chatter to start up again soon.

We are already seeing posters around here saying absurd things like Albies is outside the Top 5 Braves prospects.

Again, the dude just turned 20. He is younger than half the guys that will be drafted this weekend, and is already putting up mediocre numbers at AAA. Folks need to keep some perspective.

To KLaw and others that can't quite understand how young Albies is for a AAA player.

Keith has never been super high on Ozzie. He likes him fine but has consistently ranked him lower than other outlets. Not as high on Soroka either He likes Allard, Fried, and Gohara, and now Wright, more than most others do.

I don't recall anyone saying TD was better than Oz... Just that TD may be good enough that if we could get a haul for Albies, and maybe fill another need, it might be worth exploring. I don't agree with that, I think Oz will be special, but that is what I recall reading on the board.
