2017 Winter Meetings Predictions, Rumors, And Actual Happenings

An interesting note that some have conveniently avoided mentioning thus far...

"While he wouldn’t rule out some notable moves, “I would say my thought for Year 1 would be a more cautious approach,” Anthopoulos said. He also believed that the Braves’ payroll would likely remain around the $130MM mark."

I have no idea WHERE he's going to spend ~ $39 million (particularly if we're "out" on Moose), but that would be how much he has even if he can't move Kemp or Markakis and doesn't trade Julio.

Unlikely to go all the way to 130. AA has hinted at holding something in reserve for mid-season acquisitions. I think we'll open the season in the 110-120 range. Which means we'll spend 20-30M. The way I see it going is this: 10-15 on a third baseman, 5-10 on a reliever. So right there you are at about 20M.

I've had $120M in my head. I think that's about where we'll start out.

13M on a third baseman
7M on a reliever
5M on bench
maybe 5M on a journeyman type 5th starter

I'm starting to think we will have a role penciled in on the major league roster for the guy we pick in the Rule 5. The Rule 5 pool looks a big deeper this year.

The point is still that those are some pretty "notable moves" around these parts lately. The additions of a Frazier (defensive upgrade) and a Reed (serious pen upgrade that can close if needed) would represent significant additions to this team WITHOUT moving any of those prospects he's still evaluating.

I like AA more already if those don't count as "notable moves" as far as he's concerned - he's planning on frying some big fish at some point.

So we at ~ 90 million right now?

If this is correct I have never been more happy to be wrong in my entire life.

Guess we didn’t want Headley, he cost nothing for the Padres.

Headley as a pure salary dump. He is a solid 2 win guy at 3B. The Braves are looking to upgrade 3B. They will supposedly have a $130M payroll. They are out on Mous. If AA is all about defense, he won't get much better than Camargo at 3B.

The Braves are also not among the teams mentioned in the Ozuna rumors.

Either these "facts" don't jive, or AA is a master at not leaking rumors and has something planned none of us have even fathomed.

I don't think it's the right time for 1 year deals. 2018 is a "if everything goes right we could possibly be good" season, but 2019 could be a lot better. Anyone we acquire should be able to help us out for at least 2 years.

Position players have not garnered as much at the trade deadline lately.

Or do they still think Mitchell is a prospect? Decent fast ball with good curve and some secondary options. I guess that is what they are doing.

They're probably looking at his numbers starting in AAA and hoping they can have him compete as a starter. Anybody can crack that rotation

I have read a lot that he is known for zero leaks and has often been called a “trade ninja”.
