2017 Winter Meetings Predictions, Rumors, And Actual Happenings

13M on a third baseman

7M on a reliever

5M on bench

maybe 5M on a journeyman type 5th starter

I'm starting to think we will have a role penciled in on the major league roster for the guy we pick in the Rule 5. The Rule 5 pool looks a big deeper this year.

A payroll of $130M is a game changer as far as competing in 2018 is concerned. If we apply these assumptions:

1. The Braves will not sign anyone who rejected a QO

2. The Braves will not acquire a defensive hack

3. The Braves need to upgrade 3B, LF, the BP, and maybe add a SP

4. The Braves are no longer married to the fact Swanson is their SS

5. There are no acceptable options for LF on the FA market

The possibilities are fairly wide-ranging.

I could see many scenarios that previously seemed implausible:

1. A complete rebuild of the left side of the infield with Frazier and Cozart

2. A complete reload by signing Frazier, signing Cobb/Lynn, signing Hunter, and trading for Ozuna.

3. A Harry special

I'm curious as to how this will play out. Is a team really going to give up that much in talent for a 1 year rental? I'd assume he's not open to signing a deal with his new team who acquires him. Now also take in to account he wants to play SS.

Will he agree to an extension with a team who tells him he can play SS until his defense starts to suffer.

This will be interesting

Unless he is sandbagging AA said it would be a low-key off-season. Our main move will be for someone to reinforce the left side of the infield. Then some upgrading of the pen. Maybe journeyman starter.

If he wants to play SS I’d let him. Dans can try and learn hot corner. Wouldn’t be an offensive threat at 3B but defense would be good.

That's the thing, these recent comments don't square...

A payroll of $130M means they have $30M-$40M to spend.

They are out on Mous, yet he is the best FA at a position of need.

They aren't looking to trade good prospects, yet that's the only way to acquire upgrades via trade.

The logical conclusion is that they will acquire salary dumps to improve the roster, but Headley just went to SD for less than nothing. SD's need at 3B is far less glaring than the Braves' need at 3B.

Who are other potential salary dumps that could upgrade the Braves at 3B, LF, BP or SP?

Longoria? Prado? Ellsbury?

Sign Frazier?

This must all be a part of why AA is called the "trade ninja". Nobody can figure out what's going on.

No it doesn't add up. It's kind of fun and frustrating at the same time.

His track record has been one who trades more than plays in the free agency arena. I still think it's going to be some trades taking on some short term cash for a valuable player. The Marlins seem to make some sense.

I would love to see AA take advantage of Jeter's ineptitude. There are several scenarios I can envision where the Braves use $40M in payroll space to extract a lot of talent from the Marlins.

Not clear yet if #Marlins are actually open to moving Christian Yelich, but at least 10 clubs are inquiring. #Braves #Dbacks #STLCards among them.

I'd really think about starting with Teheran, Dansby, Newcomb for Machado if he's serious about wanting to play SS and we think he will sign long term. I have no idea if that offer even touches him, probably need some far away promising prospects too, but his contract is only good for a year longer. That's a chance to have a core of MM/FF/Ozzie/Acuna... that could be really special if our luck turns in the pitching development. With Manny at SS I'd be fine with Camargo at 3rd a couple years. Maybe even try and see if you could stupid Jeter out of Yelich and sign a cheaper veteran SP rebound candidate. All unlikely but I'd try my best.

Yes, yes. The stove is so lit right now.

“I would say my thought for Year 1 would be a more cautious approach,”

How does trading for Yelich qualify as a cautious approach?

Are we talking something like Yelich plus Prado and Tazawa to bring the required prospect package down low enough to qualify as "cautious"?

Is AA about to completely solve the Marlins' payroll problems in exchange for Yelich? It is certainly an intriguing idea.

If he can do that and unload Kemp and Markakis money on someone else it'd be hard to complain. That outfield would be sick. 3 guys who can play center.
