2017 Winter Meetings Predictions, Rumors, And Actual Happenings

It may be time to realize the 3b addition the Braves are probably going to make is something like Escobar on a 1/5 deal or less.

Why would you want Zack Cozart to be your starting 3b for three years?

Just roll with Camargo or do something bigger than that. Below average hitter before this year.

Nunez too

Yeah not a fan of Cozart. He'll be 33 next August and has never had anywhere near the sort of production he showed this year.

That being said, the Angels got him at a reasonable rate, but they can afford to make those risks with a large payroll. I certainly don't want to be stuck with the bill on him.

Cozart signing with the Angels is probably the best news we could've gotten - now there's probably one place for the Padres to go to unload Headley's salary.

If we aren't playing on Moose (especially if his price has to come down) and we don't get Headley for next to nothing, Nunez' flexibility and speed would be great - and I'm not so sure I wouldn't give him something like a 3 year/$15 million deal. Have him hold down 3B for Riley this season, and have him as your utility guy after that. He'd allow you to move Camargo in a deal if someone else is really high on him, and if you didn't trade Johan you'd have one *elluva flexible infield for the next 3 years.

Agreed. Signng Cozart and not using his glove at SS isn’t the wisest use of resources. It probably cuts his value nearly in half. IIRC, he was the luckiest or second luckiest hitter of all guy who hit 20 HRs last year. His likely offensive production in 2018 isn’t going to hold up well at 3b. I think Frazier for less money would have made more sense.

This is the first questionable move the Angels have made this offseason, and have otherwise been pretty much flawless.

Padres could really be a one-stop shop for AA at this point. Headley shouldn't cost us a ton to get, but if he could find a way to extract Hand as well (without giving up too much) that would be a *elluva deal IMO. With Headley and Markakis coming off the books next year he could look to extend Hand and others and maybe offer a higher AAV deal to an Adam Jones or McCutchen next winter to shorten the years he'd have to commit to them.

Every single contender is trying to get Hand.

The Braves have Minter, Freeman, Brothers in the BP and at least one of Newk or Fried will be in the BP by the end of the year.

Trading for Hand is a terrible use of resources for the Braves.

Yeah I’ve said it before but I really don’t think the pen will be a huge need. Save the money, and cobble together from what we have.

That said none of this should surprise those on this board. Atlanta has not historically been a huge FA signing frenzy type of team. We pick and choose and bargain hunt for the most part.

If we were close to contending, I might see more of a reason to get a guy like Hand. But he's a luxury for us at this point. Stick with what we have. Maybe sign a few reclamation projects and a guy who is left on the outside looking in after the rest of the FA's have signed. But there's no reason to go after someone like Hand.

Astros DFA Preston Tucker. Wonder if we'd spend a 40-Man Roster spot on him?

I'd doubt it, but bet someone does.

What does everyone think about Machado wanting to play SS?

Sounds like the O's want to move him but want to make sure he doesn't end up with the Yankees (WS were rumored to trade for him then trade him TO the Yanks).

I'm not sure how to value him as a 3B right now much less as a SS. He's coming off a 3.5 WAR season after logging seasons of 7.1 and 6.7 the previous two seasons. He will play next season partly as a 25 YO. He's got one year of control and WILL command a huge contract through FA. The question on the contract will be is it a 10 year $250M deal with an opt out OR is it a 12 year $360M deal with an opt out.

I've made it clear in the past that I don't think the rebuild is anywhere near over and that the Braves should NOT tie up monetary capital nor talent capital.

But, if you are going into "win now" mode....

What do you think it would take?

Hearing Giants about to trade Matt Moore or Hunter Pence (or both) to clear up payroll space and that a deal is done pending a physical.

Mystery trade! Every time I see something vague like this, I immediately try to formulate how it could be for Markakis or Kemp.

TBH, a Matt Moore for Markakis swap is not too out of bounds from a valuation standpoint, but probably leans too heavily in the Braves' favor.
