2018 MLB Draft Thread

Let me say it one more time so maybe it can be comprehended.

STOP THE BACK AND FORTH CRAP AND GET BACK TO TALKING ABOUT THE DRAFT ON THIS THREAD. ANYTHING NOT RELATED TO THE DRAFT WILL BE DELETED FROM THIS THREAD. NO POLITICS ON THIS THREAD EITHER. YOU GUYS KNOW WHERE THE POLITICAL TALK GOES ON THIS SITE. HAVE I MADE MYSELF CLEAR???????

At least a couple of you, I’m about to recommend some posting vacation from this site.

Mostly?

I’m still looking for someone to explain the tenth-rounder to me.

I should add: the other thing I need explained is the excitement over the Beck pick. He seems a solid selection, for the round, but I don’t get the elation from a lot of corners, given that he seems to have a pretty limited ceiling and, given a mediocre fastball (at least from what I’ve read), doesn’t seem like he’ll provide much relief value if he can’t hack it as a starter.

I mean, one of the principals at TC seems more jazzed about Beck then Stewart, which seems...misplaced.

A lot of it seems to be that people have heard of Beck, I think, which is pretty rare for a 4th round guy. That is weird that some are more excited about Beck than Stewart though.

Beck: Listen and keep this. He is no doubt a lottery ticket. It is due to some regression due to injuries. Out of high school he was top 10-20 pick worthy if I recall. Honestly wanted him back then and the Braves thought enough of him to want him out of high school. He has had to learn to pitch and I think he'll be Soroka-lite if he never regains his 93-94 mph fastball out of high school consistently. Really don't see a down side getting him where we did.

I’m most interested in our 2nd pick. If AA feels he has/will have the people in place to help his swing plane this could be a huge get for us.

A lot will depend on his bonus requirement. They should have some wiggle room with the seniors they drafted coming in well below slot (and were thought to be below their slot amounts after the first day), but my guess is Beck will require them going above his 4th round number. They may have to go over slot for Trey Riley as well. The upside is Beck doesn't have a lot of leverage.

I hope Josh's dad writes him a check for the difference between what the Braves offered him and what he'll end up signing for after this draft.

Didn’t the Braves rescind their offer to avoid penalties? I was thinking the Braves should redraft him just to make up for that lapse in honoring commitments.

There was a ton of confusion. I think they ended up $25,000 apart and the Braves had to rescind the offer or face a penalty. I still don't know whether the draftee from the previous round that hid an injury was Rowland or Becherer. Braves dropped Becherer's bonus, but could not slide the money toward Anthony per the rules. My point is that Anthony would have made more money under that deal than he will now.

Hopefully he has the same intangibles.

You are a treasure.

Monitoring is tough, I’m sure, but some of these parents probably aren’t even sitting their kids down and saying, “Look, you have a real future in this sport, so be careful how you conduct yourself online and in public.”

We demonstrate this with our youth group by having them squeeze as much toothpaste as possible from a tube in 10 seconds, then giving them a minute to put as much as possible back in the tube. Then we remind them of how much stupid they can post in 10 seconds. They get the point. I hope it works.

I kind of think of Beck as a RH Drew Harrington, a guy with a good college reputation that is unlikely to transition to pro ball well due to a shortfall in overall stuff.

Looking forward to round 11 today. If we have some extra money to spend, this is where to do it.
