I seriously have no idea what Jerry Dipoto is doing. Its like he wants to rebuild, but just can't pull the trigger. Its like he is allergic to the terms "prospect" and "rebuild"...

Why in the world would you undercut any chance you had at competing by trading away Paxton and Diaz, only to turn around and start trading some of your best assets for major league pieces? It just makes zero sense to me.

Maybe taking a page out of the John's dictionary by "re-tooling" instead of "rebuilding"

The Reds have non-tendered Billy Hamilton....if he is cheap enough i'd be all over him off the bench....he doesn't have a good bat, but for someone to pinch run, he'd be great...

Anyone know how he rates defensively?

He is elite defensively, and on the bases.

There are roster scenarios where he could make sense on the bench for the Braves.

For example, the Braves dump Duvall, and acquire a RHH LFer who would benefit from a defensive sub late in games...a bit like Haniger.

I'd be so happy if we signed Billy Hamilton. Not for any particular baseball reason, but I played travel ball with him as a kid and played against him in high school when he played at Taylorsville. He was the fastest 16 year old kid I had ever seen. If he hit the ball on the ground, he was on base. Nothing you could do.

he put up 2.9 fWAR in 80 games last year.
kinsler 2.3 in 128 games.
DJL 2 in 128 games
dozier 0.8 in 151
marwin 1.6 in 145

cano is a much better player than all of them, IMO, and pretty easily. and they aren't paying his full salary.

He has also been juicing recently and is 36. Odds are all of the guys I mentioned will be close to as valuable (if not more) over the next 3 years than Cano.

Yan Gomes traded to the Nats, per reports. Expected to be done this weekend sometime.

I might slow the Haniger blockbuster trade train down a little. Yes Haniger would be a great fit but IMO he was some wrinkles that keep me from giving up 2 top 5 guys to get him.
Haniger is a late bloomer. He is about to turn 28. So through age 27 he has around 1200 AB’s. Yes he has put up great numbers but I don’t see them getting any better. We have probably seen his best offensive season. Also Haniger is already not that great in the field. If his bat declines to a WRc of around 100 he will be a bad player.
I would trade for Haniger but my offer would be one 50 FV guy and one 45 FV guy.

I really believe the Mariners will hold onto Haniger at least another season

Not sure where you get his defense is bad. He has one of the best arms in baseball and has roughly average range in RF. Graded out positive defensively in RF each of the last 2 years.

I doubt we've seen his best season on offense. He had a near identical season in 2018 as he had in 2017. Higher walk rate and lower K rate too. All signs that he is actually improving.

Martino now tweets that the Mariners are slated to send an enormous $60MM to the Mets in addition to taking on the contracts of Bruce and Swarzak. If that iteration of the trade ultimately does go through, it’d be a major wrinkle in favor of New York, who would effectively be paying just $26MM of the remaining money owed to Cano.

That's quite a bit different if true.
