2018 Offseason And Targets

Interesting article from a Yankees site. They seem to think we match up as trade partners. They want Comargo for Grey, Frazier and a top 15 prospect.

I like those trades. Would prefer the Culberson deal but I like both. We could let Gray rebuild his value in the first half to give the prospects some more AAA time and then if things are going well with few injuries and underperformance by our starters we could trade Gray at the trade deadline. I am really intrigued with the idea of giving Frazier a chance to play full time in LF but I think we are underestimating Camargo in LF. If he could learn to play defense in LF like Prado did and put up a .350 OBP and .450 slugging he could be valuable in LF.

ESPN sports ticker said nats' president doesn't expect Harper to re-sign. As long as the Phillies or Mets don't get em, good news

I want to give Harper credit for one thing. He isnt coming out saying "I want to stay with the Nationals but I gotta feed my family" or "I really want to stay but its not up to me". Bull**** we usually hear from players. Those are valid statements when your a fringe major leaguer or a reliever. They better get their money while they can. No one should ever make these comments when they have 100+ million dollar contract offers.

WE GOT ANDRES BLANCO YOU GUYS WOOHOO :elefant:

Link

The Braves have agreed to a minor-league pact with infielder Andres Blanco, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred (Twitter link). He stands to earn at a $850K rate in the majors, if he can earn a roster spot.

Blanco will get a chance to impress the Atlanta brass with a big league camp invite. It’s certainly interesting that the organization has now added both Blanco and Pedro Florimon, each of whom fits the same general profile (switch-hitting, light-hitting utilitymen) and surely had other opportunities around the game.

MLBTR in their grading the Goldy trade stated: "Infielder Jedd Gyorko and 1B/COF Jose Martinez, then, would seem to be left bench-ridden, and could be prime trade chips in the weeks to come."

Jose Martinez played 335 innings in RF last year putting up a -6 DRS and had a -4 DRS in LF in less innings the year before. But he can hit, so do you think AA might consider trading for him and use him like we did Tucker before Acuna came up? Duvall could replace him on defense in games we are leading after the 5th-6th inning.

Martinez would allow us to spend money elsewhere too as he won't even hit arbitration till 2020.

Jose Martinez is unplayable in the OF.

Tucker had a -5 DRS and worse numbers than him in less OF innings last year (something like 265). So logically you could argue the same for him simply based on the numbers. I agree that both fit better at DH but Martinez bat skills are very good unlike Tucker.

Martinez is one of those guys that I try to justify a trade for in my head.

"Could we cover up his defense" - "Could we try him somewhere new" - "Could we put his bat on the bench"

I really like his bat and would love to have it on the team if his defense was even slightly below average. But he should be in the AL. His defense is just atrociously bad in the outfield. The Phillies were exhibit A of how a bad defense can cost your team. I don't think we can afford to have an awful defensive player out there.

Hoskins was a -24 DRS player and played a lot more in the OF too. He is your worst case example as he was as awful as you can imagine. But if Matt Kemp is playable then so are Tucker and Martinez. You just need to make sure you take them out with the lead and you should be okay. We did that with Tucker and it worked out fine before Acuna replaced him. Further, I am sold on Martinez bat and I like how cheap he would be too. That's the only reason I'd be willing to try him a la Tucker. But even so I'd move him to a bench role if he got too bad out there and still have Camargo/Duvall to platoon in his place.
