Heard Kimbrel may be signed right after Harper possibly. They could be the team to beat in the division.

If they land Kinbrell and Harper, there is no could be, they are the class of the division unless they have chemistry issues that craters there season.
As it stands now I believe we are the 3rd best team in our division with us being slightly ahead of the mutts but behind the Phillies and Nats.
I don’t see why the Phillies blowing money on Harper would be a good thing for us like another poster suggested.
They have an ownership group that wants to win a title and will spend big bucks to do that and signing a top 10-20 player is a good move even if you have to pay 30 million a year.If they get stuck with a terrible deal halfway thru the contract by the time Harper starts to age and regress, we most likely will be having to deal Acuna and Ozzie since our team control will be running out and our ownership group wants to run us like we are the Oakland A’s...
Pretty depressing to think about but maybe in the next year or two we will make our move to go for it while our window is open...In the meantime I believe we will be fun to watch and a fringe playoff contender.
Can’t wait to see how Riley and the young pitchers progress this season.

Bryce Harper is a 26-year-old superstar who posted a 10 WAR season at 22 years old.

This goes beyond his direct statistics. Pitchers are terrified of him and this would drastically improve the entire Phillies lineup.

Spinning this as anything but bad for us Braves fans is the height of bean-counting delusion.

What's he done since that season

What's he done since that season

Believe he was a 5 WAR guy dealing with injuries and the Bonds treatment just two years ago.

That's about 180ish% the player Nick Markakis is just based on raw numbers and 100 some games.

If it weren't for Mike Trout, Harper is the face of a generation. A total game changer.

I wanted to gauge the interest of the board for a Buster Posey trade.

From my POV he would come very cheap in return talent due to his age (32) and the 3 years plus buyout to a tune of almost $70M that he's owed. Plus he is coming off off season hip surgery.

There's a chance that he's better over the next three years than JTR, albeit at a higher expected AAV comp.

He's much better defensively than JTR at least historically.

There's also a reasonable chance that he is on the early slope of a steep age and health related decline.

Baseball is a funny game.

I didn't know 34th in WAR and 22nd in WRC+ the last 3 years equals face of a generation.

I concede that Harper is an All-star caliber player right now. But he has just not produced in recent years like a guy who has much chance of making a 10 / $300m contract look like a good idea. There are concerns about his defense in an OF corner already after his age 26 season. His cumulative fWAR the past three years is less than Jason Heywards before he signed his big FA deal, just as a frame of reference. Different players, for sure . . . but just an example to illustrate that Harper is not an elite producer. Maybe he breaks out in his late 20s? It's possible, but I'll take the other side of that bet.

What's the deal with harper's defense last season? It was kemp level according to fangraphs. Was it a blip or is he really falling off big time on defense?

1. Yes, I would like to have Harper....but he couldn’t hold Trout’s jock. He is an average defender that show a lack of effort most of the time. Has huge power, but doesn’t really hit for for average and is streaky as all get out. Will hit a lot of dingers in that park. You give a guy that much money and he should be the total package and a team leader. He isn’t a leader.

2. How about going on a little defense AA?? We don’t need Kimbrel, but we have the money...sign him just to keep him away from the Phils. Heck...you KNOW Kimbrel doesn’t want to be a Phillie?? Throw him a bone!!

3. Are the Phillies really going to have a $180 mil payroll?? If they sign Harper and Kimbrel...they will.

4. If it happens as stands we will be 25+ million away from the next team (Mets) and even more away from the Nats and Phils. Sheesh!!

5. Donaldson will have a better year than Harper.

Harper had a great year at 22 years old, since then, he hasnt been quite that level. And his defense hasnt been very good.

10 years, 300 mil is a ton of money with an opt out assuming after 3-5 years. But the Braves lineup is still arguably better while having still an elite farm. And Philly just traded their best trade chip for maybe 2 years of JTR.

Realmuto > Flowers/Mac.
Freeman > Hoskins.
Albies > Hernandez.
Segura > Swanson.
Donaldson > Franco.
Acuna > Cutch.
Ender > Herrera. (this is arguable but Herrera doesnt even have a 3 WAR in his last 300 games nearly, big sample)
Harper > Nick.

Benches about the same.

Bullpens about the same.

Rotation wise, depends if they land Keuchel or not. But Arrieta was awful in the 2nd half of the year. But as of now it's Nola/Arrieta/Pivetta/VV/Elfin, i'd assume they add a FA starter to replace the one of the last 2. And probably add another BP arm.

AA's playing the long game, while lot of teams inside the division are going all in prospect wise and money wise.
