this made me laugh. Phillies effort to obtain yet another first baseman detailed by inability to unload first baseman signed last offseason.

Do they know something about the DH no one else does?

You can add the #Phillies to the list of teams that spoke with the #Diamondbacks about Paul Goldschmidt.

A source says the teams discussed a package that would have included Zach Eflin & several young players. But the deal fell apart when the Phillies tried to add Carlos Santana

I don't. Why would he be? We don't have the resources to obviously fill that hole, unless you think Camargo or Culberson is capable of filling SS for a full season. And if we did that, we would go into next season with even less offensive depth that we have now. This Donaldson deal gave us a lot of bench depth that we desperately needed. Trading away Swanson would completely nullify that benefit.

Also, we'd be selling super low on Swanson. Swanson is a perfectly acceptable SS for us while he is still making basically league minimum. We'll roll with him another season and hope he shows some improvements offensively. If he could even get to the point to where he was putting up a .700-.725 OPS, he'd be a pretty valuable piece with his defense.

I think Camargo is beyond capable to fill SS

Like I said, even if you believe that, it creates the same bench depth problem that we just addressed with this move (while also significantly downgrading defensively at SS).
Pretty sure Camargo offensive upside cancels out the defense downgrade. Who says we wouldn't get another utility guys? We aren't talking a huge expense here. Most of the teams we are likely to deal with want MLB ready talent... that's Ender Swanson Camargo Newcomb... that would keep the prospect cost down. I think he most likely are one of the infielders and Newk... if an infielder is traded I think it would be Swanson over Camargo. But I agree that the most likely scenario is neither gets traded

AA has talked about this offseason about how he would target players that offer the team options on where they play. This move accomplishes a few things:

1. Potential to add an MVP caliber player at 3B, who can be a RH Hitter behind Freeman
2. Camargo shifts to a super utility role to play all over
3. Instantly improves the bench, which was a weakness for us last season.

Having Camargo on the team will allow him to step in for Albies, Swanson, and Donaldson when needed. I don't think he or Swanson are traded this offseason. Are we overpaying Donaldson on a 1 year yea? Probably. However, it gives us the flexibility on the field as well as payroll flexibility next offseason.

A lot of people projected Donaldson to get a 1 year/ $18-20m deal. A solid bench piece could cost anywhere between $3-5m. So in one move, you essentially upgraded both positions.

I still think that Teheran is traded at the winter meetings coming up. We can probably expect a cOFer who is good defensively, okay with the bat. Then I expect us to add a bullpen piece and possibly a rotation piece.

i really hope we don’t trade swanson, start camargo, and try and sign another utility guy. unless someone wildly values swanson i think it would be dumb.

Is there such a bad thing as having a lot of good players. We dont have to trade anyone.

The Dodgers last year had pretty much three everyday guys (Grandal, Turner, and Seager/Machado), everyone else was platooned. More options you have the better, especially late in games when you need to PH.

Ender and Wright for Carrasco? Newcomb for Peralta? Acuna to CF? Pick up Joyce to platoon with Duvall on a corner?

Adds ~ $12-$15 million and allows you to keep every prospect other than Wright plus both Top 20 picks. Pache takes over CF in 2020 with Acuna sliding back over, Riley takes over 3B in 2020, and you've got Donaldson, Julio, and O'Day's money coming off the books to spend next winter.

Julio's trade bait if we wanna add some more this winter.

Are there actual teams who want Julio?

Seems like after last season we’re gonna have to either eat some of his salary or throw in extra prospects to get someone to take him off our hands.

Detroit could be an option. It’s a pitcher friendly park, and being on a rebuilding team they could get him for 1yr/$11m and trade at the deadline

Off the top of my head, i could see Cincy, Detroit, Oakland, and a couple others who could use him if AA didnt care what the return was coming back.
