DOB: Despite any posturing you might hear now, don't be surprised if #Braves are players in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. I keep hearing things that make me believe they will be.

For those keeping count, DOB has now reported that we 1) have $30 million to spend, 2) won't sign the elite free agents and 3) might get Harper.

He is right regardless of what happens the rest of the way. Very impressive.

We will sign Haper for $10m take that to the bank!

Or... he could have heard all of those things and there's just a ****ton going on right now.

Still, doubt it happens!

Kurt Suzuki loss bring on more Tyler Flowers! Hope he catches at least 163 games for the Braves this season.

I don’t believe we’ll sign Harper at all. But on our budget that’s a pretty bold statement to for one of our beat writers to make. Somebody on the inside had to give him some reason to say it.

Also, if they are talking to Bryce then that could why we haven’t heard anything on a catcher yet. But again I put the chances of signing him at 5%

Zook's deal is much worse than Flow's if indeed both seasons are guaranteed - his performance certainly warranted a two-year deal with someone though.

Bad in the sense that it causes one of the fallbacks to disappear, but good in the sense that there's no need to worry about sentiment (from players, Coaches, execs, or fans) and can now get on with it. Wouldn't be the worst thing to hear about Markakis signing elsewhere soon so that bit of drama will be lifted as well.

There are scenarios where Harper is at least somewhat plausible.

Front loaded contract with an opt out after year 2 and/or 3...and the Braves give up any hope of making real upgrades elsewhere on the roster.

“Being players” and actually signing him are completely different things. I have very little reason to believe the creative offer from the Braves will beat the sheer amount of guaranteed dollars other teams are going to throw his way.

Let's give Harper a 400 million dollar contract and then get him to loan us 40 million. Then we can sign anyone we need! We'll pay him back Bobby Bonilla style.

Just looking over FanGraphs' Free-Agent Tracker - https://www.fangraphs.com/tools/free-agent-tracker - and noticed that their projections don't differ from those on MLBTR terribly other than they've got Grandal and Gonzalez only getting three-year deals, but they've also got Donaldson and Herrera getting three-year deals.

If you prefer to use their projections, and were willing to sign Ramos (3/$36 million) rather than Grandal (3/$45 million), McCutchen (3/$42 million) rather than Brantley (3/$45 million), and Cabrera (2/$18 million) rather than Gonzalez (3/$30 million), and get rid of Duvall and Freeman, you could come awfully close to fitting in Soria (2/$16 million) AND Holland (1/$5.3 million). Total 2019 salary added if you went that route would be $43.7 million. You'd still have to sign a cheap OF as your 25th man to replace Duvall (or bring him back on the cheap later in the winter), but going that way wouldn't cost ANY draft picks and should substantially upgrade the pen and bench.
