Like the trade for the Yankees.

The other two players I see going to the M's are Erik Swanson and Dom Thompson-Williams. Not sure if there is another player.

In another thread I suggested Newcomb and Wentz as an opening bid for Paxton. The package the M's got was pretty similar to that. A little better, but I would have been willing to improve on the opening bid. To equal the Yankees' package, we probably would have needed to add someone like Muller, which push come to shove I would have done.

And that’s a no brainer. As usual, the Yanks come out on top if he stays somewhat heathy. Now that makes the market go higher for everyone else (which makes the value even better).

The return for Paxton makes me think we should make a similar offer for Carasco. Paxton and Carasco are very close in value.

Yeah I'd say that was a really good trade for the Yankees. I thought the Mariners could have gotten a Sheffield-equivalent prospect plus a nice 50 FV guy. Maybe they are higher on Swanson and Williams than the industry consensus. Williams did have a bit of a break out year across two A ball levels. He had a .909 OPS with 22 homers, but still, he is 23 years old and he isn't a guy you hear much about.

Swanson did well in AAA at age 24. I'd say his value is similar to Wentz or Muller. Thompson-Williams is more of a fringe prospect. He did well in high A at age 23. That doth not a prospect make.

they almost always are... which is why im surprised we’re never really in on these trades lol

Nah, usually they are more close to even value swaps. Overpays/Underpays are outliers.

And this wasn't an extraordinary underpay or anything like that. Just a tad light. Perhaps the Mariners value Swanson and Williams more than the industry consensus.

If we are dead set on getting a SP, then I agree with nsacpi that we should make a similar offer for Carrasco. Maybe try to spread the value out a little more. Something like Gohara, Beck, and Cruz for Carrasco. I'd still prefer for us not to acquire a starting pitcher, but if we're dead set on it then maybe we could pick one up at a good value.

I think it was a fair trade.

In another thread I advocated offering Newcomb plus Wentz for Paxton. Which I think is a little light. It would have been a decent opening bid. I hope we at least checked in with the M's.

Why you trying to trade Gohara? I think we would be selling him cheap.

Hmmm, disagree on Swanson. He just turned 25 and I'm not sure a 3.86 ERA across 72 innings in AAA at age 25 is anything to write home about. He does seem to have decent command and some strikeout capabilities, but I think generally I would prefer Muller or Wentz over him. At the beginning of the year Fangraphs didn't even have him in the Yankee's top 27 prospects.

I just feel like with the injury history, a player like Paxton is too risky for a team like us to take a chance on. Yanks are better equipped to absorb that.
