2018 Offseason And Targets

Yeah, just saw that with trade the 22 option becomes a player option.

I still think it's worth looking at given sending back as little as possible.

As for 2019, sending Teheran the other way leaves a net add of $8M. When you weigh the fact that the Braves will likely add some bench piece for $1-3M that Seager would instead be, then the 2019 net is really $5-7M. The key is 2020-22 and if he's headed for the dumpster or even a slight rebound.

his contract runs 19/19/18/15 (with performance escalators that could take to 20) so let's assume 2022 is at $15M because if he's playing well enough to get the escalation to $20M then you don't care about the finances.

So, you have to pair the Haniger return in with the Seager return:

2019: Haniger (~0.7M) + Seager (19M) <=> Teheran (11M) + Non Haniger FA such as Brantley or Cutch (~$15M)

2020: Haniger (~4M) + Seager (19M) + Riley (~0.5M) <=> Non Haniger FA such as Brantley or Cutch (~$15M) + Donaldson ($23M)

2021: Haniger (~8M) + Seager (18M) + Riley (~0.7M) <=> Non Haniger FA such as Brantley or Cutch (~$15M) + Donaldson ($23M)

2022: Haniger (~12M) + Seager (15M) + Riley (~4M) <=> Non Haniger FA such as Brantley or Cutch (~$15M) + Freeman ($22M)

I was onboard with Seager until I read this. His contract may be worse than Cano’s. I’ll pass.

I could see the Phillies being a real player for Haniger if it came down to taking Seager back. Seager would be an upgrade at 3rd base for the Phillies I believe. Do the M’s need a 1st basemen. I think the Phillies have several to spare.

If I’m the Mets I trade McNeil at the first jump. Doesn’t hit for power, below average defender, doesn’t walk... Most of his value is tied up into a SSS inflated BABIP and baserunning value.

There’s no way he’s a proper headliner and if teams are actually viewing him that way then we need to start floating Camargo’s name who is a superior player and younger.

I mean his numbers weren't significantly different from his minor league career average, though you are correct that he did hit into a good bit of luck. .142 ISO isn't what I would classify as having no power however. It's not significant power, but it's above average.

Rosenthal says Segura to Phillies is lined up, pending Segura waiving his no trade clause. Hate that, he’s a good player.

(1) He’s 27 years old and played the last few seasons in AAA Coors. Those minor league numbers mean very little.

(2) .140 ISO is league average, which he barely eclipsed, so you’re technically right I suppose. But he did that with a good amount of triple luck (11 doubles and 6 triples) and an inflated BABIP, I would take the under on him repeating that next year without a severe uptick in homeruns rate.

We have learned time and time again to discount second half break outs by older rookies playing on bad teams. It’s entirely possible he’s a late bloomer, but I wouldn’t want to be the team that has to bet on it.

Yeah you're probably right. It's tough to properly value a guy like McNeil and I imagine other GM's likely have similar concerns.

Seattle has to deal Haniger at this point. He’ll be in his 30s before they’re close to competing again.

The Braves are currently sitting around $107M, and Haniger is pre-arb in 2019. Assuming a ~$125M payroll the Braves would have $15M-$20M left to spend and possibly more if payroll is higher than I expect or they cut loose Duvall.

I would hate to see them waste that free payroll on a FA starting pitcher, but it would be exciting.

Haniger makes sense because hes pre-arb, and would allow AA to splurge elsewhere assuming he's available. And Braves obviously have the farm to get him if he'd part with some guys.

The more I see the Mariners trade the more I think Haniger is available. AA really needs to go all out and reel that guy in. If we could trade Teheran to Cincy or Oakland and save that 11 million then we could still have around 30 million to spend which is completely nuts given how good our team would look at that point. You could splurge and get Keuchel and Britton if you wanted. Endless possibilities.

I just saw where Sherman thinks Harper will resign with the Nats and Machado goes to Philly. Mets may turn to Grandal at catcher. The east looks like it could be stacked next year.

That link is jacked up lol. I just saw where Sherman thinks Harper will resign with the Nats and Machado goes to Philly. Mets may turn to Grandal at catcher. The east looks like it could be stacked next year.
definitely. I’m guessing AA is scouting the other moves out, but we’ve gotta do work if we want to win the East. Segura and Machado are legit upgrades for the Phillies

Why would the M’s take back Santana. That doesn’t make any sense. Segura should be positive surplus and not require taking back a bad contract. Maybe the Faillies are sending a bigger package so they can desperately dump that contract.
