2018 Offseason And Targets

Anybody think the Braves are still in on Realmuto and Markasis would be brought in on a 1 year deal if we did get him?

I'm fine with Markakis if we're able to add Realmuto, honestly. We'd be adding OBP and pop in JT and OBP and high average in Kakes. Heck, and a GG ;)

The Brantley talk cooled off with us and I don’t believe he’s our target and Pollock is asking way to much so he’s out. I could see Markakis on a 1 year deal but I hope not.

Agreed on Pollock. My guess is that the Mets land JT and sign Pollock to fill an outfield spot.

A report came out weeks ago about the Mariners front office being racist toward latino players that didn't get much media play. It was an ex-employee so you take that grain of bitter salt for what its worth usually. However, I looked at the players traded and acquired and it is interesting. 6 of the 9 players tarded are latino. 4 of the 13 players acquired were latino.

Players traded
James Paxton
Michael Plassmeyer
Mike Zunino
Guillermo Heredia
Alex Colome
Robinson Cano
Edwin Diaz
Juan Nicasio
James Pazos

Players acquired
Jake Fraley
Mallex Smith
Justus Sheffield
Erik Swanson
Dom-Thompson Williams
Jared Kelenic
Justin Dunn
Jay Bruce
Anthony Swarzak
Carlos Santana
Omar Narvaez
Gerson Bautista
Ricardo Sanchez

They now have 9 players on their 40 man roster who are latino. Looking at their top 30 prospects, not counting Bautista and Sanchez who are on the 40 man roster they have 4 more latino players out of the top 30.

I would keep an eye on the Dodgers, a team AA has close ties to. Imo the Dodgers are the team most likely to acquire Realmuto, perhaps with Verdugo as the main piece going back to the Marlins. I also think they are the favorites to land Harper. Which would open up the possibility of a trade with them for Pederson.

maybe they should paint circles where defenders can't leave until the ball is pitched. If they leave early the hitter and/or runners are awarded an extra base... then they can add lions and gladiators who can kill a player at anytime. should peak the interest of the non old people..

Weird how the people who want this to change are also the ones who complain there isn't enough old school "manufacturing" of runs. Sac bunts, squeezes, too much emphasis on strikeouts, bb, and homeruns. None of the people who want to get rid of the shift want to just call out players who simply can't make adjustments and hit the ball where it's pitched.

USA TODAY article just posted: The Phillies indeed had a deal in place for Diaz, officials directly involved with the talks told USA TODAY Sports. The officials requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about potential deals. The Braves also were negotiating with the Mariners, until the Mets stepped up their bid.:

If we were negotiating, we still are, most likely. We would never have been in on Cano. But, you never know.

Brodie van Wagnenwhatever is gutting the system over there.

I'd love to get Nimmo or Conforto for LF if they are moved to the Marlins.

I still can't believe Philly unloaded Santana. I thought he'd retire over there collecting dust.

Haniger will cost a lot if Ms do in fact rate him as 1 of 5 best cOF in game.

From MLBTR

As the Mariners continue to explore further ways to get younger and shed payroll, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the team won’t be attaching Kyle Seager’s contract to Mitch Haniger in an effort to escape the remaining three years and $56MM on Seager’s seven-year deal (subscription required). First and foremost, the Seattle organization considers Haniger to be among the five best corner outfielders in baseball

Well of course a GM who is attempting to get max value for a player is going to say something like that... this doesn't tell me much. Haniger may be a top 5 corner OFer... certainly close. A deal for him would hurt, the price would be steep, we would have to overpay, and I would. A major major upgrade with a ton of payroll flexibility left

Braves are likely offering prospects and the M's are dumb enough to say "No. We only like guys who are already underperforming major leaguers. And we enjoy taking pennies on the dollar for our good players in order to move bad contracts."

They can have Julio and we can take Leake off their hands but may not work since it sounds like they are racist

Yeah we are probably still negotiating. Haniger and Diaz are the only 2 I’d want and 1 of them are gone now. I’d suspect AA is trying to work out something he can live with for Haniger.

So the umps call a technical foul if the shift is used. Sounds like the NBA.

Just say you can only have two infielders on either side of second base. Put a short white line where the outfield grass meets the infield for optics. I don't see the problem. Award the hitter a base if the rule is violated. The shifts have gotten ridiculous and have led a bunch of hitters who have no business worrying about launch angle changing their approach.

Going by 2018 fWAR, they have a point.

I don't think many teams are going to project him as a 4+ win player for the next 4 years though.

Haniger could very well end up being the Ms version of Realmuto...the guy they hold onto for an unreasonable package because every other deal they made prior was pretty bad. Hopefully DIPoto has one more bonehead move in him and AA can take advantage.
