2018 Offseason And Targets

I think the Braves could trade Flowers elsewhere, lot of teams need catchers and he's pretty affordable.

My thoughts from day 1 of the Mac signing was that it was done to give Mac 1 last chance to play MLB and odds are he wouldn't make team out of ST giving him the chance to retire as a Brave. All this being with the trade happening for JTR. The difference in payroll would be less than a 4 mil increase for JTR.

I'm not going to sell Albies short. Steamer has Yelich at 4.8 WAR and Ozzie at 4.4 for 2019 for example. Strong up the middle defenders are WAR machines and Albies is that guy.

I agree with you, but to be fair Steamer has Ozzie at 3.3 in 2019. The FAN vote has Ozzie at 4.4.

Flowers makes 6 mil, JTR makes a little under 5.9 mil, JTR in, Flowers out, .1 gained in payroll.

Using the most accurate numbers I could find, here is the Braves current payroll with only 1 open bench slot (assuming it will be an OFer):

# Pos Player 2019 Salary
1 C Flowers $4.00
2 1B Freeman $21.36
3 2B Albies $0.55
4 3B Donaldson $23.00
5 SS Swanson $0.55
6 LF Acuna $0.55
7 CF Inciarte $5.70
8 RF Markakis $4.00

9 SP1 Teheran $11.17
10 SP2 Folty $5.48
11 SP3 Gausman $9.35
12 SP4 Newk $0.55
13 SP5 Touki $0.55

14 BN1 Culberson $1.40
15 BN2 Duvall $2.88
16 BN3 Camargo $0.55
17 BN4 Backup OF $0.00
18 BN5 McCann $2.00

19 BP1 O'Day $9.00
20 BP2 Viz $4.80
21 BP3 Freeman $1.58
22 BP4 Venters $2.25
23 BP5 Minter $0.55
24 BP6 Winkler $1.61
25 BP7 Fried $0.55

Total $113.96

That $114M figure could obviously be pared down a bit in a number of ways, but I'm guessing the Braves currently have $10M+ they can use for the 2019 opening day payroll, depending on how much cash they want to hold back for upgrades at the deadline.

I honesty have no idea what AA will do because the roster seems pretty set, but I'm guessing it's either a big trade or a small addition to the bench and maybe a value add to the BP.

Where does the Sutter money fall?

Given Camargo's flexibility, i could see us just carry Camargo, McCann, Culberson and Duvall as of now.

And go with 8 in the pen.

jives with my numbers...Cot's lists opening day 2018 payroll at 118M, but i come up with 113M, including Kazmir

either way, i think we open 2019 with a payroll in the 120-125 range...and have budgeted for the whole season something in the 130-135 range

we've had a lot of poor information, especially from Bowman, on this

he already has a contract. he's stupidly cheap
2015: $0.6M
2016: $1M
2017: $3.5M
2018: $7M
2019: $9.8M
2020: $12.5M
2021: $14M
2022 Team Option: $15M ($1.2M buyout)

Well damn I didn't realize that. I still think Albies is the better player by the end of 2021.

right...but early in the season we have tended to go with 7 in the pen and an extra bench guy...i'm thinking we might carry a third catcher during that period so McCann and Flowers can be used more to pinch hit

Lot of folks with options to keep the Gwinnett shuttle hot.

Guys with options include Raffy Lopez, the catcher we signed a few months ago, Carle, Biddle, Sobotka and all of the young starting pitching prospects. We should have plenty of flexibility to play the AAA shuttle game.

Kiley just did a good job summing up the Braves plan:

I think ATL had lots of possible moves, they're at the opening of a window and chose to not act too aggressively. Standing pat for one more year of prospect development is the easiest of the correct answers, so that's what they seemed to have chosen

It explains all the short term deals and the reluctance towards cashing in any prospect capital.

I think AA will eventually cash in on the prospects we're hoarding but he's waiting on the right time/player which is fine honestly.

Could be Realmuto, could be someone else next year/down the line. There's always surprise players that get made available no one sees coming.

At the deadline you have to cash in prospects. But I think he will try to follow the model used in the Gausman trade. Cash in multiple second-tier prospects while trying to hold on to the best ones.

So what does AA say to the season ticket holders? Markakis isn’t really what a lot were expecting and were expecting a bigger offseason.

We’re the reigning NL East champs, the young guys should continue to develop, and we added Josh Donaldson. While I doubt this is the last signing or trade we make, I think season ticket holders should be fine.

Decent chance Matt Chapman is made available if the A's take a step back in 2019. Certainly would be good to have the prospect capital to trade for him.
