2018 Offseason And Targets

Didn’t liberty let us go out and get Santana one year when we needed him? 2014 or 15?

yup...and at the end of that season we failed to make the playoffs and the GM was out of his job

moral: don't ask liberty to bust the budget unless you are pretty sure it will lead to a long post-season run

Not gonna happen, but I wouldn't ask them to bust it either.
Just thinking it would be nice if they could see that it would be good for their business and our baseball.
Gotta spend money to make money.
They would basically be insuring a full Sun Trust Park and Battery for the next several years.
Not to mention the "marketability" of the situation.

This is not true, Renfroe had a 5 DRS this past season combined in RF/LF (not a negative at either position) while Myers had a 7 DRS combined in RF/LF last year. Myers OF struggles the year before were in CF. He is a good corner outfielder with a strong arm as the numbers show. But you are right about his contract, his contract makes a trade unlikely IMO. They are more likely to move Renfroe.

UZR had rated them below average. But maybe I was wrong about the position.

I’d guess the Braves probably have the secondary portion of the trade prepared but the primary pieces are still up for discussion. If it’s truly a top guy, a 15-25 range piece and a lower-tier prospect, there’s no reason this isn’t done yet.

If we ended up getting a JTR deal done while only giving up 1 top pitching prospect and none of our big 4 positional prospects, everything about this offseason would be made okay and I would bow to AA's feet in deference faster than SCOTUS did in Chevron v. NRDC

I don’t know but have heard that Anderson is the only pitcher we have who is considered to have ace potential. It worries me to think we do another “Wainwright.”

Translation from Mish: I have no idea what I'm talking about and just throwing stuff against the wall to see if it will stick, he words it just so he can't be held accountable if no deal to the Braves happens. Onto you nsacpi and I are, Mish! :emot-siren.gif.17:

This would be a pretty light return for Realmuto. Barnhart has 3-4 years of control, but his framing stats are pretty bad.

Not light until we know for sure what AA's offering. For all we know, he's been unwilling to put Riley or Anderson in the deal. Sure, some rumors say he has offered at least Riley, but since Riley, Flowers, and a throw-in would seemingly top that maybe he hasn't. There are also those persistent rumors saying the Marlins prefer our prospects - maybe AA has drawn the line at Pache/Waters, Flowers, and a throw-in.

If AA has even offered Pache in a deal for just two years of JTR then he should be fired immediately!

Sorry, but that's ridiculous.

A guy who MIGHT hit (and who might end up being Billy Hamilton with less speed) is not untouchable, regardless of defensive ability.

I'd prefer to give up Pache over Riley, all else being equal.

You’re nuts. Pache is a much better prospect that Riley.

Pache is FAR more "available" in trades than Riley. Ender is signed through 2022 when Waters would be ready, and some services already are ranking Waters higher than Pache. There's not another 3B in the system behind Riley until you get to C. J. Alexander, and he's likely not going to be good enough defensively to stick over there.

If you trade Riley, you may well have no choice other than to spend big money on Donaldson next winter - Arenado may be close to an extension to stay in Colorado, and the Gnats will probably extend Rendon (possibly even if they bring Harper back, but almost definitely if they don't). That leaves you with Camargo (who AA apparently doesn't believe in as an everyday 3B) and Donaldson next winter if Riley's in Miami (or elsewhere).

Wonder if AA's part of the interest that's picked up in Adam Jones. If you could add him inexpensively on a one year or 1+1 deal he and Markakis night not be an awful platoon on the cheap, and he'd be a bit of an upgrade from Duval.

With ST just a few weeks off these guys are gonna be more willing to trade guys and FA to take shorter deals to get settled with their new team. Hopefully the JTR stuff is over by the end of next week bc the Marlins don’t wanna take a chance on him getting hurt during ST.
