2018 Trade Deadline ROSTERBATION

I still think its a pretty one sided deal, but yeah it bridges the gap a little bit I guess. I still think Orioles fans should be unhappy with it given what the Rays just got for Archer.

Think about it this way, a few years ago we signed Pache and Cruz for 3.4M. That slot money has a fair amount of value. They will be able to sign a couple top international prospects with it.

we now a lot of starters on the team. What will happen, when McCarthy and Soroka come back? Ok, Soroka will be sent to AAA.

Folty, Newcomb, Teheran, Sanchez, Fried, Gausman, McCarthy, Soroka!

I think it was smart to proceed from the assumption that McCarthy and Soroka would not be coming back. Fried, Allard and Gohara are our depth (spot 6th starter). Those 3 and Touki could also play significant roles in the pen. We are deep in pitching, but don't have a single outstanding pitcher. Of course, some of the younger guys could become outstanding. That's why we're all so happy to have held on to them.

Anyone thinking Touki is not well thought of should read delusional Oriole fans tweets. They prayed for Touki and were going to throw a parade if they got heem.

ok...now it makes a little more sense...otherwise its an obscenely one-sided trade...its hard to value slot money, but i think as a rough rule 1M has about 6M or so of surplus value

I've seen estimates anywhere from 2x to 5x.

The Os have suddenly made it a priority to acquire that pool money though, after not spending a dime on international players.

I'm guessing the front office thinks Gausman still has some upside. He's still pretty young, has a big-time pedigree and his big issue has been home runs. Get him out of the AL East, maybe you can get that HR/9 number a little closer to 1.

AA's approach to the deadline seems like an attempt to provide reinforcements to a team he doesn't necessarily think is a playoff squad without really digging into the prospect stash too much. So you get some guys who might be able to help, make a show of good faith to the fans and the players and don't lose any of your meaningful future assets.

I think AA played this just right. We are a team entering a big window to win. There is no reason to make desperation trades now. Bet on the farm. Call ups are just like trades really.

Folty, Newcomb, Teheran, Sanchez, Fried, Gausman, McCarthy, Soroka!

Firstly, the Braves have rotated through 6-7 guys all year.

Secondly, I wouldn't count on McCarthy or Soroka pitching another innings this year.

The rotation is likely Folty, Newk, Teheran, Sanchez, Gausman, with Fried acting as the primary 6th guy. Allard is now also on the AAA/MLB shuttle as needed now that his clock has started. Same with Gohara.

There is no log jam.

AA really bought three guys and traded for one...I know some players were traded to the O's for Gausman, but those guys were never going to be anything with the Braves.

What are your overall thoughts on the deal? I think it was great for us and just solid for the Orioles, considering that we shouldn't value that slot money nearly as much as other teams.

I really like what the Braves did at the deadline. Relief pitching, bench bat, and SP depth. Nothing spectacular but all good pieces for not alot of cost.

So now the rotation stands at...

Teheran
Folty
Newk
Gausman
Sanchez

In no particular order.....

Wonder if we move Sanchez out of the rotation into a long reliever role, and use Allard/Touki/Gohara in the rotation to finish up....suddenly becomes a decent staff

I like it better than paying what it would have required to beat the Pirate's package for Archer, that's for sure.

According to FG's In-Season updated board: https://www.fangraphs.com/scoutboard.aspx?draft=&type=&pos=&team=atl

JCE (FV 40+) = $10M
Cumberland (FV 45+) = ~$15M
Phillips (FV 40) = ~$5M
Zimmermann (FV 35) = fodder

Total = $30M+.

O'Day carries some amount of negative value in the range of $5M-$10M, and the $2.5M in pool money carries some positive value in the $5M-$10M range.

I have Gausman with roughly $45M in surplus value.

Chalk up another win for the surplus value model. Kudos to AA for getting another quantity over quality deal done for an MLB asset.

Do I think the Braves needed a controllable 2-3 win SP more than a LHH upgrade at 3B? Not really, but he certainly helps. It's still a bit of a problem that Flaherty continues to be on the roster while Camargo will get all the PAs vs RHP.

Yeah I agree with all of that. I love the deal simply because it is an improvement and it cost us very little. We basically gained... what... About 3-4 wins of value for nobody of consequence this deadline? No way to chalk that up as anything other than a win. But at the same time I do think we did leave one glaring need unaddressed.

I would love to see them get creative. Maybe piggyback 2 young starters to go innings. Our September depth should be off the charts.

Philly and Arizona improved today too. If Ramos comes back mid-august strong that will help Philly as their catchers don't hit much. Loup is a lefty that could improve their pen too. Arizona pen has been weak and they improved it today as well.

With the day off Thursday, does Newk come back on regular rest Saturday?

If so, the Mutts get the first taste of Folty/Newk/Gausman this weekend.
