2018 Trade Deadline ROSTERBATION

I'd much rather have a guy like Mouse than Machado if we're comparing acqisition costs.

I don't think we have the starting pitching to win it all, so there's no need to sacrifice the talent for a guy like Machado, unless it's a much more reasonable price ala JD Martinez.

Yes. I have a feeling Machado will command a large premium. I'd rather go for Beltre or Moose.

It's a bit odd to see folks against trading prospects for a win-now rental at 3B.

Obviously they aren't going to give up Wright for Machado, but if the Braves are still legit contenders in August, they will be making additions. The obvious weaknesses are 3B and the BP, and there will be players available to upgrade those areas of need.

They should be able to grab someone like Mous or Beltre for a package comparable to what the DBacks paid for JDM. It should be a bit of a buyers market at 3B this deadline.

Punting a lineup position on a contending team when there are players available to upgrade and the team can afford to acquire those players is not an option.

I don't get "news" from them; but after braves' games, I watch their program that hops around the league. I think it's pretty entertaining... I find Greg Amsinger funny

How DARE you watch MLB Network... If you didn't know better before, now you do as the almighty Enscheff has spoken.

Anyone who gets any info from MLB Network is the definition of a casual fan.

You mean the Yankees and Red Sox Channel? I tried to watch them for a while, but everyone in the world is not a Yankees and Red Sox fan, and nobody else gets more than a passing mention before the next Yanks or Sox story.

You act like they are there to turn a profit. That would be silly. I mean two huge markets playing really well and one would think a station manager would think to capitalize on that somehow. But I think equal time to the Royals would be a good call too.

Why would ANYONE give up those kind of prospects for a few month rental. Maybe a team like the Nationals or Giants that sees the window as literally “this” year. For any up and coming team like the Braves...it would be stupidity. If you want him...just sign him in the off-season. We have one of the top offenses anyway...it’s not a weakness. Everyone agrees that....unless it’s a miracle...we won’t win the WS this year. Anyone that wants to pay the price can sign Machado. Paying prospect capital AND giving him a big contract is high on the stupid scale. You only give up prospects for someone that is signed long term on a reasonable contract.

The problem with this line of thinking is you never know how many opportunities you'll have to make the playoffs, especially for a mid market team like us. We'd like to think with the farm and current roster that we're pretty for a good 5-6 run, but baseball is funny and weird stuff happens.

If it's a move that doesn't mortgage the future for a rental (i.e. no top 5 prospects and no more than one top 15 prospect) then I think it's a smart move. I'd hate to lose Fried, Touki, Wilson or Muller for a rental, but this a team that's pretty good as is, and perhaps a bat like Machado could put us over the top.

Good thing you didn't bet on it.. Couldn't tell you the last time that has been on my TV. But good try.

He was making a prediction based on one data point. That's poor statistical analysis. You'd think he'd want a little larger sample size.

That is not a good trade for us, but it isn't as outlandish as some other trades (like Soroka and Riley for Machado).

I imagine it likely will take a pretty good prospect for a Moose and Herrera trade though. Probably 1 prospect among the Touki, Fried, Muller, Wentz, and Wilson group.

If DMGM's choice of Fried/Touki/Muller and D-Pete/A-Jax get it done, I'd probably bite. Has to be early though - not at the deadline. If he wants that level of prospect for rentals, I'd want those guys within the next 3 weeks so you get ~3 months of production from them.

Pozzy or not, replacing Bautista/Flaherty with Moose and Moylan with Herrera makes this a playoff team IMO - WITHOUT losing core pieces. You'd still be able to upgrade the pen further going down the stretch by using Gohara and/or Allard out there assuming they're not in the rotation.
