Yea, no. Turning 29 later this year, dealing with injury issues already, and only signed through 2019 anyways. That’s a horrible blow to the organizational depth for a move that seems to have more risk than upside.

If I totally believed in Folty/Newcomb I’d be more inclined to add to the rotation.

Because then I would see a three man playoff rotation. And the framework for future rotations.

My hesitation now is really whether I think they are close enough so that getting one front line guy would help put them over.

I’m just not sure who that front end guy would be.

It’s also a little much.

Bumgarner doesn’t have the remaining control that the guys who did get those kinds of trade packages.

Every market is different.

I would be willing to give up Wright or Anderson for him, I think, if I believed Atlanta was legitimately good.

Braves will eventually have to move some pitching.

If you aren’t willing to make that kind of deal might as well just declare your undying love for prospects and not make any major trades at all and resolve to basically do it all internally.

I’m not sure about “no major trades”, but I’d like to see the Braves mindful of maintaining depth.

But really I’m more where you’re at: I’m not sure the Braves are “there” in terms of a big addition. Plus, I’m not sure that such an addition should be to the rotation, and I’m really skeptical Bumgarner should be that addition even if adding to the rotation is prudent.

Give up Wisler, D-Pete, Sims, Rio Ruiz, and Wentz.

I mean I think I know what you mean, but if so that was understood in my phrasing.

The team with Bumgarner has a better chance of winning most every game he starts.

A team would have a better chance of winning with Bumgarner than anyone he would replace on the Braves.

There is value to that. Some folks don’t want to pay the cost of it. I get that. It is a tough one.

The Braves have rarely chosen to give up much for starting pitching - Denny Neagle aside.
 
For those who might still be thinking about adding young, controllable TOR pitchers, I just want to report that I am sitting behind home plate at Safeco watching Archer tonight, and am thoroughly disappointed. He has a limited arsenal - hasn't thrown a change yet, all fastball/slider, timing is all whacked out... a different pitcher than the guy I saw three years ago. No development at all.

Glad we didn't trade 17 prospects for him like I wanted.

But now I'm ready to trade 17 prospects for the Rays' Next Big Thing. I saw him today, Blake Snell. OMG. 96 on the black. Ungodly breaking stuff. Impeccable command. He went 6, walked nobody and struck out 12. Cash pulled him at 100 pitches...if he'd let him go the Mariners would still be waving bats at air.

Best young pitcher I've seen in a long time. I've still got wood.
