I would maybe do that. A reminder that Julio is around 1.5 WAR and Archer is at .5. He has a ton of strike outs, but also a 4.25 ERA (which is also higher than Julio).

So when you think of acquiring Archer...it’s a gamble as to whether he would be successful. Any deal should reflect that, but NO way the Rays trade him at a low price.

Imo, this is bad view point to have. Rental RP values are extremely low right now, even the top shelf relievers. If you can get Britton for a package centered around Demiritte or someone similar, you have to make that trade. And guys like Zach Duke should be available for non-prospects types as well.

I definitely agree and understand this entire sentiment. My biggest thing is the transition from AL to NL, control and his peripherals are solid. IMO, he'd be worth a haul.

Folty, Archer, Newk, Soroka, Gohara/Fried/Whoever is LEGIT.

Other than the top high-leverage guys, relievers aren't something you necessarily want for more than the current year. A lot of them turn out to be Sam Freeman - good one year, garbage the next. Buy someone who is good this year for spare parts, and let someone else overpay him off of this year's results going forward.

2. AA seems to be patient (much like the Yankees are), in letting the market iron out and finding a better deal.

3. When he makes a move, it will likely not be anyone we have discussed much. Sanchez has been killer and we thought he was junk. He probably has three or four ways to go and that will depend on what deal out there.

4. We can get two PERFECT bull pen arms and I’m not sure that helps us a ton. We need a power bat, probably a starting pitcher, bullpen help. We get that and we are still behind many teams.

5. This is not the year for us to go all in. AA knows that. Don’t expect very much at all. Most moves will be made in the offseason after we have signed free agents and we know what holes we have.

Given the volatility of BP arm (especially the non-elite ones), I see no point in paying more for a guy just because he is controlled longer than 2-3 months. The acquiring team is just as likely to get stuck with a zero as they are to get longer term production.

Just pay a small price for a rental arm or two. There is no need to make this any more difficult than that.

Agreed. Outside of a truly elite arm, like an Andrew Miller, there's never any reason to give up much for a RP. And getting them with little control is not really a problem.

I'm hoping when he talks about not being interested in rentals it's more for the major acquisitions. Going for a closer or a big bat that's a rental doesn't make a ton of sense for us overall if it's going to cost us prospects with actual value.

However, I really hope AA isn't so dogmatic about it as to realize that whether a lefty middle reliever we want is signed beyond this year or not is totally meaningless. Especially considering these kind of guys rarely bring a prospect of any real value in return.

Number 1 is arguable. May be its GM talk, but these rental relievers pretty much have a set value and that value isn't very high.

On number 4, we don't really need offense. Sure someone like Moose or Cabrera would make the bench a lot deeper and help cover injuries, but the offense has been consistently strong all year. We do absolutely need relief help and that would help out tremendously. The ability to make it a 6-7 nning game cannot be overlooked. I'd like to see us add a SP too, but not anyone that would cost much. Someone like Jake Odorizzi is who I would target. May be even James Shields if the Chi-Sox pick up most of the tab.

Want to know the best way to ensure this isn't a contention year? Fail to improve a club in the middle of a playoff chase while all the other contenders make additions.

This "not our year yet" narrative is complete buffoonery, and frankly, stated by folks who are scared to lose. They want to be able to fall back on the extremely lame "we didn't really try" defense mechanism.

The calendar tells us it is a week before the trade deadline. The Braves are 1 game out of 1st in the NL East, and 1 game up on the DBacks for a WC slot. The Braves are 0.5 games behind the Brewers for the right to host that WC game.

If this doesn't count as a contention year, then I'm not sure what does. The fact it came a year early doesn't make this chance any less important than potential chances in the future (ask the Nats).

The Braves need to make 2-3 additions. We've long ago detailed the holes on the roster and identified several options to plug those holes. The pieces are available on the trade market at reasonable prices, and the Braves have the resources to make it happen.

Those additions need to happen. Period.

Hosts Bowden and Mish straight up asked him about Donaldson and he said that the goal was to find players that they can control for more than just this season. They later also said that likely rules out someone like Moustakas.

He said that's been difficult because the goal of most selling teams right now is to deal players who will be pending free agents.

Another challenge has been teams asking for "our 8th or 9th best prospect". As we all know, the 8th best prospect on the Braves would be most teams best prospect.

He didn't rule out acquiring a starter or "a bat", but it did sound like bullpen was a priority.

Popular choice to be ranked 10th is Touki Touissant — hyperbole to call him most teams best prospect — but still something to be pissed about in a trade for rental in a season where the Mets moved their closer for two 40s and some int’l slot money.
