2019 MLB Draft Thread

I'm going to break something to you...

Picking 9th, there probably isn't going to be a slam dunk guy everyone loves...in any draft...ever.

In fact, most drafts don't even have 1 of those JUp/Harper/Stras type talents that makes everyone drool. If the Braves can somehow get a FV 50 guy to drop to 9, or grab 3 FV 45 guys at 9/21/60, it has to be considered a successful draft. If they come away with 3 risky arms with their 3 top picks...we will have something to complain about.

Unlike data analysis, no matter how much we read, none of us actually know anything about projecting these guys. All we can do is read what guys with actuual connections are able to repeat to us. Dudes like Fat Ben like to pretend they have scouting chops while they watch grainy video on the couch stuffing their face with Taco Bell, but we have seen just how little dudes like that actually know.

Ben is just big-boned and gentle, IMO.

Monday morning changes on many draft boards. Composite has Braves taking Bryson Stott (UNLV shortstop), with Fangraphs and MLB Pipeline Rankiing agreeing. No one has us taking Carroll, who is projected 12th to the Mets.

Three different mocks have us taking Jackson Rutledge. Only two of six project Bishop going past Atlanta and getting picked 10th.

Given the Braves new FO under AA is tight lipped, hard to know what direction they go.

Fangraphs and ESPN have us taking Carroll. Pipeline and Baseball America have us taking Rutledge.

I haven’t seen a mock with us taking Stott.

You aren't breaking anything to me, but I do appreciate the appeal to the unknowable coupled with more than a hint of condescension. One of my favorite approaches as well.

I'm simply advocating for upside over floor in the first round. That's it.

I'm not sure there is anyone they could pick I would complain about. I think it's sort of silly to get wrapped up in the MLB draft beyond vague notions of strategy.

We are getting to the point where the only mock that matters is Mayo's. Pretty sure he nailed Anderson, and one year got something like the first 15 correct. Or was is Callis? I get those 2 nerds mixed up all the time.

No idea how he knows, but that dude tends to be the most accurate this late in the process.

I agree with the part in bold 100%. Non-impact MLB players can be signed every single off season, so the only thing that truly matters is getting young stars.

I also find it funny you claim it's silly to get wrapped up in the draft after posting about it all day...

I acknowledge the silliness.

Most of it was one handed texting while I drove over rural South Carolina though.

It was pretty well known the Braves had been scouting Anderson long and hard. At the end of the day, that is the one reliable publicly available indicator that a team is really interested in a player. It is the kind of gossip scouts like to share. The year they drafted Anderson they also spent a lot of time on Senzel.

This year, they seem to have scouted Bishop and Carroll pretty intensively. Among the pitchers they seem to have been in the most on Rutledge, with Manoah also seemingly of interest.

You might get your wish on Priester. They seem to have scouted him the most of the HS pitchers.

The late dark horse is Greg Jones. Mayo and BA both seem to have heard some chatter on the Braves following closely during his conference tournament and he picked a good time to shine. Switch hitter. Athletic. Maybe a poor man's Abrams.

I'd lay a small wager on Carroll.

Carroll and Priester would be great. Abrams and Priester would be ideal, imo.

If the choice is Carroll/Priester vs Abrams and a lesser arm...I have no real informed opinion.

Any worthy bat and high upside arm is fine. Just don't go arm plus arm.

BA's final mock has the Padres taking Abrams. I think this is the big hurdle for us getting him. Some rumors they want to go in a different directions.

At #9 they have us taking Rutledge.

At #21 they have us taking Priester. Interestingly, they have Greg Jones going to the Mariners at #20. It looks like Jones and Priester are our main targets with this pick.

I'd take Carroll if he's there but any of Carroll, Bishop, Rutledge would be ok with me.

Two arms wouldnt be smart, but we'll see soon enough.

Law says he thinks we’d take Manoah over Carroll and Langeliers. He does have Manoah going 8 though, so guess we should be rooting for that.

For comparison:

#9 BA has Rutledge, FG has Carroll, and Mayo has Rutledge

#21 BA has Priester, FG has Will Wilson, and Mayo has Greg Jones
