2019 MLB Draft Thread

You know what's interesting. The wrist issue might not even be bad luck for the FO. It might be extremely lucky for them. I really don't think Stewart's fall the past year has a lot to do with his wrist. I think it's far more likely he was overrated.

It's entirely possible that the Braves front office made a big mistake in drafting Stewart 8th overall and that the wrist issue gave them a very fortunate out. Total speculation and not something to judge the FO on, but still interesting.

Using a very tortured analogy, I would say the selection of Stewart is like picking up a gorgeous woman in a bar, taking her back to your place, and just when things start getting physical, she utters "Oh, by the way. I'm married to a really jealous a-hole and if he finds out about his, he'll kill us both." Depending on the urgency of the moment, you still might go ahead, but there wouldn't be a bright future ahead.

I thought that was going a completely different direction

Sorry, Striker, you earned that one.

I agree that really didn’t make any sense at all.

How so? It's very possible Stewart was overrated. His stock has plummeted. Maybe it's his wrist but it's more likely he was overrated to begin with and has fallen back to earth.

If he was overrated, then spending an 8th pick on him was a bad move.

Then the wrist issue happened.

Instead of signing an overrated arm we got the 9th pick this year. The wrist may have bailed the front office out from a top 10 bust.

This is all based on the premise that Stewart was overrated and his draft stock drop is due to regression and not an injury.

I honestly don't know why I'm arguing about this so much. I honestly don't really care all that much about Stewart at this point. If I'm going to criticize the front office it should be about our pen. This has become a "someone is wrong on the internet" thing.

Misner is an interesting one for me. College bat, huge raw power, good athleticism, good plate discipline, projects as a RF. Seems like a good fit.

This.

I'm also interested in Hunter Bishop.

I'm wanting to see the Braves take a giant, athletic, masher college OF and both Bishop and Misner fit that profile.

If we go HS pitcher at 9 I might lose it. I can't take another young starter with questionable control.

Misner is intriguing based on the tools, but he's slashing .216/.362/.324 in 21 SEC games this year. Hard pass at 9 for me.

Bishop is definitely someone I'd love at 9. I saw some mention of him slowing down in Pac-12 play, but he's still hitting over .300 with an OPS over 1000. I still think my ideal realistic scenario (assuming Bleday goes higher) is Bishop at 9 and overslot high schooler at 21.

I'd be interested in Misner at 21 just based on the tools. But you're right, not at 9.

Based on nothing but reading internet blurbs, I hope the Reds try to be tricky and go under slot at 7 so Bleday falls to the Braves at 9.

Lilith: Likelihood that Abrams is there at 7 for the Reds? How about Bleday?

12:43
Kiley McDaniel: Let’s say 15% and 3%

and

Another Braves Fan: Do you think there’s any likelihood that J.J. Bleday drops to the Braves at #9?

12:54
Kiley McDaniel: Almost 0% at this point

pretty much scuttles that dream.

I'm interested in seeing what changed that made them go from mocking Bleday to the Reds at 7 to stating he has virtually no chance of reaching pick 7. I'm guessing he doesn't make it past the Tigers at 5, who love SEC studs.

Maybe Greene is available at 9?

I personally would like to see us take Gunnar Henderson with our first round pick. Cameron Cannon is another one I'm keeping my eye on.

At this point my dream draft would probably be Greene at 9, Rutledge at 21 (doubtful), and Wallner at 60. I think this draft has a lot of guys who would really look nice in our system. I just hope that a couple teams try to get cute early on and we end up getting a steal.
