2019 MLB Draft Thread

Here's the only way I can somewhat justify our terrible first day of the draft. Normally when you underslot a top 10 it's to overslot your next pick or two. We picked three guys in the first two rounds that we can underslot.

The only way that makes sense (apart from being cheap) is if we intend to overslot a ton of later round picks. With MLBs ridiculous international restrictions on us, we need lots of chances to hit in this draft. If we can overslot a bunch of guys in later rounds, we'll have more guys with at least some talent who could develop.

I don't like this strategy but it is a better explanation than ridiculous incompetence.
 
Bowman’s article is very telling since he is willing to be the organizational mouth piece that writes whatever the team wants.

He said they picked three college bats because this is the worst high school crop in a long time. Of course, you won’t find a single site that covers the draft and actually says that.
 
Assuming you guys are correct on us getting these guys under slot, could we perhaps take a shot on jerrion ealy in the 3rd? He was thought to be a 1st rounder by many before a poor senior season, and he's a really good football player that's signed with ole miss.

I bring up those two guys because they were not 20 HR guys coming up through the minors. They were good defenders with versatility. Power is very hard to project.

After my extensive viewing of the film, in my expert opinion, I see him as more of a Craig Ehlo. Maybe a Steve Beuerlein. Best case outcome is Vinny Damphousse or Silver Charm, maybe Terry Labonte. Kim Zmeskal or Shannon Miller probably a stretch.

Terry Labonte is a name that hasn't come to mind in 20 years. Well done.
 
Looking at who was available and going by the highest ceiling rule I would have gone Rutledge and Malone. People would have probably complained about that.

I am concerned they seem to have deemphasized ceiling in making their picks. It seems to be a good rule to follow in the first round.

Taylor ISO in college (Virginia)...
Freshman = .085
Soph = .099
Junior = .161

Shewmake...
Fresh = .201
Soph = .125
Junior = .171

No, I'm not saying shewmake will become a slugger, but who knows? Maybe we think all he needs is more lift in his swing or something. Shewmake is a good hitter... I do know that

ETA... I never thought Bregman was gonna be a prolific slugger from his days at LSU. Here's bregman's iso numbers by year (fresh to junior): .177, .139, .212

I'm definitely not saying shewmake will be bregman. I am saying these college hitters are far from finished products some times

I have a kid that orders chicken fingers every time we eat out. Not because she loves them, but because she knows she won't hate them. I remember her getting mad once when we went to a Mexican place because they didn't have chicken fingers. She rolled the dice on tacos instead. Now she loves tacos.

I think our new draft guy ordered chicken fingers last night.

Looking at videos of him hit, they'll have to overhaul his swing to get any power out of it. Level swing, good bat control, but more of a slap hitter.

Im afraid he'll have to sacrifice bat control to boost power. The hit tool will likely suffer.

Is it possible? Sure. Most things are possible at this point. But drafting a college guy at 21 and intending to tinker with his swing is not a great strategy.

My general feeling is that you shouldn't take a hitter who can't hit, or a pitcher that doesn't have a great pitch. I'm sceptical about the catcher, but the other two seem to have at least decent hit ratings. Maybe the Braves genuinely believe they got the three best players they could, but there were certainly comparable players with significantly better hit ratings available at each of the three spots.

It really feels like they placed a priority on short development time and high floor. Given our MLB roster and minor league system, I can't understand that.

Drafts aren't judged for several years out. However, when it's all said and done, I'm ultra confident that this draft will be considered a catastrophe in 3-5 years.

There's zero upside with any of our picks. We drafted a probable backup C, a utility player with no pop or speed, and a SS with questions about his bat. Those are ok selections in rounds 7-10, not in the first 60 picks.

The farm system was rebuilt drafting high upside guys like Allard (I know he hasn't lived up to the hype), Riley, Waters, Wentz, Muller, etc. This is more like Lipka, Hursh, Gilmartin type garbage.

I read that Shewmake has speed.

And Hursh had the best pitches in that draft in his sinker

it does take a while before a draft can be fairly evaluated...I remember the Soroka and Riley picks being roundly panned...everyone loved the Braxton Davidson pick
