Here's the only way I can somewhat justify our terrible first day of the draft. Normally when you underslot a top 10 it's to overslot your next pick or two. We picked three guys in the first two rounds that we can underslot.
The only way that makes sense (apart from being cheap) is if we intend to overslot a ton of later round picks. With MLBs ridiculous international restrictions on us, we need lots of chances to hit in this draft. If we can overslot a bunch of guys in later rounds, we'll have more guys with at least some talent who could develop.
I don't like this strategy but it is a better explanation than ridiculous incompetence.
