Zaidi apparently saying the Giants could be buyers come the deadline. That would be a game changer.
Thats what I would expect a seller to say....

The part I like about getting Wheeler the most is that he is a local kid and pitching close to home may end up having an impact on his FA deal. Of course those chances are ridiculously small but you never know. Braves have an embarrassment of financial flexibility.
So are we back to pretending that a market rate extension for a trade target somehow makes that player more valuable?

I heard a rumor that not every player signs for the perceived market value.
It happens. But in a case like Wheeler, if he wants to give us a discount I imagine he will whether or not we trade for him. So the value of the trade is not a derivative of the possibility of a hometown discount.
McCann for example gave us a discount. Without our having traded for him.
I think it's kind of a fool's errand to put a lot of stock into home town discounts.
With that said, you're most likely to get one from someone that is very familiar with your organization. Like McCann (though I wonder how much of a discount that really was).
That's the only small advantage I think trading for a guy you might want to re-sign could bring. He maybe gets to have a positive experience with your club and you get to feel him out for fit.
But I think that makes a little more sense in a league like the NBA where salaries are a little more obvious. And we just saw that fail for Toronto despite delivering the best possible experience.
Cashner might be a more realistic target than Wheeler.

Wheeler 4.69 ERA 3.81 xFIP
I go with the guy with the better xFIP. Depending on price of course. But in the case of Wheeler vs Cashner, I'm not sure how Cashner is an improvement over a number of in-house options.
