2020 Trade Deadline Thread

The Marlins have acquired Marte from Arizona

And traded Villar to the Jays.

I really enjoy Starling Marte, so I think this is the second missed opportunity the Braves have had to trade for him relatively cheaply.

I guess Caleb Smith is a better MLB pitcher than anyone Atlanta would agree to trade, but it's relatively low value package, I think, considering his strong first half is largely seen as smoke and mirrors.

I guess the Marlins are going to try and make a run in 2021. I don't really get exactly what this does for 2020.

Interesting speculation that Starling Marte is on the market because the Diamondbacks won't carry his reasonable salary of 12.5m next season and that this is a sign of how teams will be cutting payroll next season.

Not sure if that's correct, but if it is that's a potential advantage for teams coming out of rebuilds that have few payroll commitments.

The Marlins, for example, are said to be in that sweepstakes.

Most of their top prospects are close-to-ready OFs, AND they're still paying big chunks of money for Greinke to pitch for the Astros. Would be interesting to see if there was a way to get Escobar.

You can make the case for the Marlins wanting to make a run this year by adding Marte. Trading Villar away is a head scratcher.

If there is a lot of cost cutting in baseball the winter market and free agency might be pretty good place for bargain shopping. If your club has any money itself.

Teams with very modest payrolls and young players and big money clubs might be in the best position.

Mid markets with a lot of commitments and/or bad contracts would seem to be the worst positioned.

Decent resourced bad teams could also profit from eating contracts.

Everyone on arizona is likely available given the Marte deal and the previous financial issues listed by their owner.

Unfortunately I think we'll have to do our work in the off season. And who knows what Liberty will allow our budget to be.

No. But I bet it's what Neck is making or less. I could be mistaken but wasn't Neck forfeiting his salary by opting out? Not sure how all that works but I always thought they tried to use what cash they allotted for Markakis to give to Puig.

Good point

The Braves have a massive debt payment for their venture into playing real estate moguls, nobody is going there right now, and folks can’t comprehend the Braves don’t have cash to spend?

We probably won’t know for sure, but it’s easy to understand why someone like Milone is literally all the salary AA can add. This would be an excellent time to have some free cash though.

Tommy “the innings eater” Millone broke the bank.

Max Fried is 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA entering tonight's game at Boston. All other #Braves starters are 1-10 with a 7.23 ERA.

The fact that Millone appears to be our only deadline addition is sad....i'm looking forward to hearing the spin job from Braves beat reporters and front office talking about the positive signs Hamels is showing.

AA has always saved room in his budget for the deadline. You just have to wonder if Liberty took that back with COVID.

Still wonder why someone isn't doing the NBA style trade like the one we got Touki in. If a bad team had money they might be able to take on a contract like Ender and get a prospect for that deal.

Yep. I say our budget will be back in the $120’s. Honestly (given they are not traded),

Soroka, Fried, Anderson, free agent, prospect pitcher (surely one of the other eight guys steps up)

Probably try to sign back Melancon and/or Greene

Assuming Pache up, Ender stays because we can’t move him and one Duvall/Nick back...what...one DH bat (maybe sign back Ozuna? Waters up in say July?

There aren’t a ton of spots. AA will likely work to move Ender...not likely though. Not many will be looking to spend or take on money.

I’m very curious what teams are insulated the most from the pandemic. It seems everybody is going to be rolling back salary.

I'm certain not having any revenue from fans at the park is causing a recalculation of the budget.
