2020 Trade Deadline Thread

Like others have said, we're likely going to see a Markakis–Acuña–Duvall alignment starting Friday; this is sub-optimal, in general, since it means Duvall regularly faces RHPs, and Markakis occasionally faces LHP starters and likely sees LHP relievers in key spots. It's also not the ideal defensive alignment for the OF. But obviously the Braves feel as skeptical as you that Pache can hit better against LHP than Markakis—who, fwiw, has actually killed LHPs this year, to the tune of 161 wrc+, versus 136 wrc+ against RHPs—so they're willing to make that "sacrifice" (along with the legitimate defensive sacrifice) and keep Pache down. This is probably the right move, tbh, given the paucity of LHP starters the Braves face this year, and the benefits of further delaying Pache's service time, plus having him regularly work on things at the alternate site, as opposed to riding the bench.

Obviously, they also feel Duvall is a better option against RHPs, even given his below-average career splits (91 wrc+ career versus RHPs), because he's at least got the power to do some damage (.460 SLG in his career versus RHPs); he's also been slightly above-average (104 wrc+) against RHPs this season—so, again, this is probably the right call.

The bigger, looming question is what to do with / about Inciarte. He's fine as a defensive replacement for now—his defense hasn't been as stellar as in the past, but he's still above-average, and late in games it's probably better to have him in CF, Acuña in RF, Duvall in LF, and Markakis on the bench. But next year is an entirely new question—and I have to admit, despite being a Inciarte defender (or, at least, a firm skeptic of a bottom-falling-out total decline), some of the numbers are starting to look abysmally worrying:

Sure, even in those very good years now in the rear-view, his EVs were only around 82-83 mph. But losing a full five mph from that—falling sub-Foltynewicz in terms of hard-hit balls—doesn't seem remotely viable for major-league PAs. Like, maybe Fried should hit and Ozuna DH for Inciarte-territory.

Don't think there's any question that Pache is the 2021 Opening Day CF at this point - the only question is whether there's enough financial flexibility to DFA him this winter if someone won't take on any of his salary (can't imagine anybody cares about the return). With Pache AND Acuna on the roster, it's awfully tough to justify giving him a roster spot - even if his defense wasn't declining.

I get not having Pache on the roster with Markakis and Duvall around this season - they've both over-performed expectations against same-handed Pitchers, but it's all but impossible to imagine that there's enough money available to bring them both back (at whatever that might cost) while hoping that luck continues - AND pay Ender to sit beside Culberson for 6 months.

we owe Ender 9 million regardless. the question is is Ender worth the roster spot to AA.

I'd say no. I bet AA will say yes. And if it's a normal season AA may say it's worth a roster spot to put Ender or Acuna in CF to get another year for Pache. It makes sense you may want to see Pache hit in AAA. If he can't OPS over 800 in AAA, what is going to hit in MLB?

Duvall is likely to get a raise in arbitration, but I doubt Nick (if he decides not to retire) is going to be in much more demand than he was last year.

I think it is pretty likely that Ender breaks camp with the team if for no other reason than to give the Braves a body to keep Pache down until they recover his service time expended this year.

I would explore seeing if there is some team that would take an expendable prospect to take Ender. If I'm a GM with a CF hole and a rebuilding or in between team, I might be willing to take a flyer on him if I also got something interesting. This is wishful thinking probably.

Money likely will be more important than lottery pick prospects more than ever this coming season.

I think the only way you trade ender is if we do a reverse brandon phillips deal. Someone agrees to pay 1 million to take a flier on him.

I do not listed to DOB's podcast. But he put out a snippet on Twitter. Anyone else hear this? He said that the Indians and Rangers wanted multiple guys from Anderson, Riley, Waters and Pache to get Lynn or Clevinger. If so, then I agree we should not have made a move.

That sounds a lot like "get the fan base off my ass" spin, especially given that the package that the Indians was significantly weaker than that supposed asking price. The Rangers very well might have been asking for the moon, as evidenced by the fact that Lynn is still there.

Maybe initially asked but I doubt they were demanding that as a final given what was the final deal.

Define multiple. Because if it was just Riley and Waters I think you have to pull the trigger on that.

Agree with those that are skeptical. Just what he said.

As I recall he said 3 or the 4.

I would not have done Riley and waters for Clevinger. I might have done it if I was able to replace Riley with Seager for a low cost and I had the money to do so.

We dont have a replacement for Riley so that's a not for me dawg. I think the Rangers might have given Lynn is still there. Padres didnt even get Patino from the Padres, or Abrams. Doubt they were asking THAT much.

What you end up with is a team in baseball purgatory - not good enough to really win anything (meaning advance in the playoffs and see a period of time where they are true WS contenders - and don't give me the two division titles, The Braves aren't really contenders until they can advance past the first round of playoffs, something they haven't done in almost 20 years), not enough money to buy your way there and not enough viable minor league talent to grow everything you need and still add on the fly as a contender needs to be able to do.

We’re officially contenders now everyone! Freeman can stay!

It was always silly to claim a 90+ win true talent team wasn’t “good enough to really win anything”. The fact the Braves are making a deep run doesn’t suddenly make him wrong...he was always wrong.

What we have here is a guy who took a logically faulty stance and is too stubborn to relent, so he doubles and triples down on the stance and then eventually vanishes rather than join in the celebration.

I have not vanished. Some of us have careers where we do things like earn a living.

Just because I don't choose to celebrate with you doesn't mean I'm not celebrating. In this case, I am not saying it's not you. I'm saying it is you. I don't like you. You are a jackass. A weasel. I hope that's clear enough. That goes for your little devotees as well. I have no use for any of you (if you think I'm including you, then you're right). Not that I expect any of you to care. Getting down off a high horse is a lot of work.

Creating straw man claims based on a limited area of a more detailed and nuanced conversation is what you do. I guess it makes you feel good somehow, superior in some way. If that fills some hole for you, fine. But it seems shallow to me. Petty. Needy even.

I said all along that I hoped to be wrong and that Freeman would lead the Braves to a WS win before his current contract expires. Maybe that will happen. This has been a good start.
