2021 MLB Draft

For me converting arms isn't a bad thing....per se. Maybe it's even overblown in my head, but it's interesting that whatever philosophy is being taught regarding command is not registering with these pitchers. Someone smarter than me can counter that, but everyone I see in the minors up until their major league debut either has little command of loses it quickly. Perhaps we need to invest in the Chris Reitsma school of pitching.

Again, I'm not sure what folks wanted instead at that position in draft.

Not like there is much difference in this guy and say Jackson Rutledge that was popular last year.

If you get 4 major leaguers of any kind out of the draft you're doing ok, so I have a hard time getting very excited about it as failure is the expectation.

That's why I put the stipulation if he stays healthy... that's really my only concern with him. I know his velocity was down a bit late in the season as well. Still... his stuff is disgusting.

oh for sure, i’m with ya. his injury risk looks huge to my completely untrained and potentially useless eye.

Looks like there will be some extra slot money to spill over to today. Curious to see if there's a couple of hook shots from half court that they will target.

at that range the granny shot is probably more accurate, but im not sure AA has the lower half strength to get it there.

Not sure.

How has picking high school pitchers worked out for Braves?

Braves have somewhat rarely picked college arms early up till recent years.

They had mixed at best success with high school arms.

Current regime is just getting started really.

Everyone has mixed success with every approach, but I think the Braves did pretty good during the Coppolella/Clark era with high school arms (some of which have pitched for the Braves and some who have been used in trades): Soroka, Anderson, Allard, Wilson, and (most recent) Muller. Wentz is shaking off the rust in AA after missing 2020 with arm surgery. Injuries happen and they happen to both high school and college guys. I'm fine with the Schwellenbach choice as a pitcher, but he did have arm surgery in high school.

I think those of us who are mildly critical harken back to the days when the Braves had money and could throw it at higher risk potential high ceiling guys. The new regime did some of that on the second and third days in 2019 and we'll see if they do that again today. It's still early, but the 2019 draft (Brown's first with the Braves) is looking like a total washout, but the abbreviated 2020 looks better. Can't grade these things for a few years, so we'll just have to be patient.

Surely you mean the 2018 draft? 2019 gave us a bunch of interesting prospects. It could be one of our best classes ever when it's said and done.

2018 class looks brutal though. Only Vodnik and Dean are looking like they might be anything. Maybe Trey Harris can get back on track at some point. T

Correct. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sounds like an interesting start for the day... the chatter on Twitter is that Shoemaker was a late riser with marked velocity improvement... had some real helium.

Shoemaker was at the combine a couple of weeks ago, so everybody saw him there. Was ranked by a couple of services. Big kid so there's hope for projection.

Maybe it's just me, but I love the last day of the draft when they start rattling off names with no breaks for analysis.

I'm seeing a sprinkling of the more highly-ranked high school guys deemed to have signability issues showing up most notably Riggio and Diaz.

Same... I hate the later rounds of the NFL draft, but the later rounds for the MLB draft have become pretty fun IMO
