2021 MLB Draft

My favorites
Round 6 - Justyn Henry-Malloy, 3B, Georgia Tech - Just realizing who he is and can be. Can pick it, average to more across the board. Love this pick.
Round 7 - AJ Smith-Shawver, RHP, Texas HS - was a good QB in high school. Huge arm. Needs focus on pitching but low to mid 90's power arm already.
Round 8 - Tyler Collins, OF, Texas HS - Throwback Kenny Lofton type. Contact and speed!
Round 11 - Adam Shoemaker, LHP, Canada HS - throws 95 MPH (sits there)and has the makings of a swing and miss breaking ball.

There are some better college picks than at first glance that have a chance including Cal Conley and Luke Waddell.

Good list.

Thanks guys. I think the Braves had a solid upside type draft. There are guys who have touched mid to high 90's and 100. I don't pay much attention to touching 100 as much as I do where their stuff consistently stays. Cusick sits mid easily. As does Shoemaker, Schwellenbach and Shawver. Probably got a couple of relievers out of it depending on development.

Shawver to 50's point will need a Tarnok plan. Overall I was better prepared for the strategy in my mind and they pulled it off perfectly.

Coppygate was tough but infusing these guys and international free agents Ambioris Tavarez and hopefully Diego Benitez (SS Venezuela) are helping to right the ship somewhat.

I am interested to see where Conley and Waddell start their careers. It's really difficult to get a lot of live competition ABs in the FCL with so many players on the roster and a rainout or two a week. If they show enough on the side, they may find themselves in Augusta out of the gate. Same may apply to Malloy.

I hope so. The FCL roster is putrid. The better prospect is a guy who's been there for it seems like 10 years in Brandol Mezquita (actually 4 years - the only signee who stayed after Coppygate), Kadon Morton and Backstrom who hasn't hit yet. Of course I take any of those complex stats at very minimum face value.

Tyler Collins, Dylan Spain, Anderson DeLos Santos and Andrew Hoffmann are intriguing adds to the FCL roster.

A combination of things have really messed up our entry level teams. Half the guys who have been playing a lot on the FCL team would have probably been better served to play another season in the Dominican Summer League. But the overall depth shortage caused by the Coppolella miscues and the truncated 2020 draft left us without enough players to field teams in both the Dominican Summer League and the Florida Complex League. Now with players joining from the 2021 draft, the problem will be having enough ABs to go around. Guys will have to get their swings/innings in during instructional league play. Not a particularly good way to develop players.

Schwellenbach needs Tommy John, per Kiley. Apparently we knew, and that’s why he was underslot. Kiley said he would’ve been our first rounder until we found out about him needing TJ.

Not too concerned with TJ these days

I agree. But what sucks is he’s probably out for all of next season, meaning he’d debut in 2023 as a 23-year-old with zero pro innings. That’s not ideal.

They have made some puzzling draft decisions but some of them have born fruit.

I'm puzzled by when it must have happened. He was throwing 95 at the draft combine a week or so before the draft and there was no indication of a problem in his interview.

I was hoping they would break out the Delorean and put him in the June lineup.
