2022 Spring Training Thread

Strider is one of those guys who climbs so quickly out of nowhere that the general industry is not able to identify early enough. I think it’s pretty evident at this point though that he’s our top pitching prospect and unlikely to get traded.

Edit: it is interesting how bullish ZiPs is on Elder, Muller and Strider. All three are considered top 100 prospects by its formula which is ahead of the general consensus.

Was Beachy a porn star? 'Cause that is what Strider looks like standing on the mound.

Very true.

With 28 player rosters through April, the case for piggybacking some of these young guys is even stronger. We have some good options for righty-lefty mixes, and by May 1 we could have a much better feel for what Wright, Muller, Strider, Davidson, and Ynoa can be this season.

This was always the plan coming into the season. Outside of Verlander there were no real options at SP that interested AA at all.

I'm not sure we know that. It wouldn't surprise me if we had some interest in other options but ultimately didn't like the price or the interest wasn't mutual. I would also expect that he inquired about guys like the Oakland starters when he was pursuing Olson.

That said, it certainly seems to be the plan now and given how everything has played out it seems to have been the right move. The DH makes it even more of a no brainer and even harder to screw up.

I just hope we actually do it intelligently. I could absolutely see us doing some stupid things like piggybacking Davidson and Muller and not even trying for a platoon advantage.

That’s because zips doesn’t project the very youngest prospects since there’s no stats to project.

Please stop acting like you knew what any plan was. AA literally said he was looking for SP depth, so that was definitely in the plans.

I think we could piggyback same handed starters fine as long as its just two times through the order and in between we use an opposite handed reliever to pitch to the top 4-5 spots in the order third time through.

Almost every position is listened to for an upgrade but I have a hard time believing knowing what was on the cusp of the major leagues that AA put any priority in non-top flight arms for the starters.

Elder is not 40 man. When room opens up (newk released?) I think he's on it. Everything I've read about Elder suggests to me a guy we can put in the 5th starter spot and get 4-6 innings of 2-3 run baseball. Braves seem to let him throw more innings than most. Not a stud, but just seems like a guy who will eat innings for cheap for 5-6 years. Especially if we can work our way to better OF decent in the next couple of years.

I'll just hope that someone out of the Muller/Wright/Touki/Davidson/Strider group actually emerges into a top 3 pitcher. I doubt it. Still think the most likely scenario is a 5th starter for davidson, a reclamation project for Wright and Muller/Touki/Strider to be high leverage relievers (not all 3 even hit that). I also see no reason to like the soft tossing lefty out of WF we picked in round 1.

Of course, but missing population notwithstanding, it’s notable how much that system likes these three. Particularly, Elder and Strider who both have only a single professional season of performance data to weigh against.

If we were going to take one of the young guys and plug them in as a traditional 'starter' who we wanted to get 5-6+ innings from each turn, I'd probably pick Elder over anyone else right now.

I don't get Contreras in RF.

Some of you think he can be an impact hitter right?

To me he looks like a guy who is a good hitter as a catcher with potential to be great hitter as a catcher. Can he catch?

If he's not a catcher he's just a guy. I'm thinking he's something like 230-275/300-333/400-450. Next year he's likely close to 250/320/420. Are we excited about that anywhere other than catcher? Do you all see more from him?

Yeah, using him in RF is a bit odd. If he puts up the numbers you say then his bat doesn't play well in the outfield. Either the Braves think he's going to hit better or else they just want to see if he could provide some more flexibility on the roster.

"Just a guy" that can give you the kind of offense he's capable of AND can play multiple positions - especially Catcher even if it's just in a pinch - is an awfully valuable piece to have.

If Gattis would have been athletic enough to play defense anywhere he'd still be playing.

The difference in having your emergency Catcher be a guy who isn't good enough defensively to be an everyday Catcher and a guy who volunteers to be the emergency Catcher because it helps him win the last spot on the roster (Culberson) is far from insignificant.
