2022 Trade Deadline

They'd be smart to move him for a haul. Signing Soto doesnt really help much in the short or long-term. Getting a massive prospect haul back does. Soto probably wants to hit free agency, so i dont think it matters what they'd offer. Only offer that might make him consider is 10 years/500M, no defferred money.

TBH, I’d go ahead and move him and be done with it. By signing him, you will be mediocre or below for the next 5 seasons. By trading him, you could jumpstart a contention window inside of a few years

This is exactly correct. Right this moment the Nats are choosing between a 2-3 year rebuild or a 5+ year rebuild. They will be bad for a long time if they extend Soto, and by the time they are good he will be a declining expensive player.

The optimal play may be to trade him, then sign him in a few years as a FA. Then they get the prospects and the long term contract of the star player.

The decision they have after Soto would be their bigger contracts like Stras, Corbin, etc.

Outside the box idea, but they could attach Stras or Corbin to a Bell or Cruz deal to dump the salary. Or they could just move Bell or Cruz to add to the prospect depth and just roll with the Corbin/Stras contracts through the rebuild.

I’m not sure why the Nationals want MLB-ready guys in 2022 for Juan Soto. This team won’t be good for a couple of years. Why waste 2-3 years? I’d want prospects that will he ready in 23 or 24.

The correct answer is to pay down those contracts so other teams will give prospects in exchange.

Marte is one of the top 10-15 prospects in the game, plus 3 other fillers.

If anyone is curious, that’s how you maximize pitching value during a rebuild. The Reds did very well here.

Want to see an example of a team that cracked open their window of contention, didn’t really win anything, and then made moves that slammed it shut? Look back at the Mariners in 3ish years.

A lot of people love Arroyo. Baseball America have him as their #2 prospect. Huge upside SS

Just an insane package for a 1.5 year rental.

Yeah, the Ms are one of the worst run franchises. Not Rockies or Rangers bad, but probably on the Phillies level.
