This season has been a useful illustration of just how powerful the pull toward median expectations can be in baseball. It's a long season, and there are these really strong forces pulling even the best teams back toward the pack. 104 wins is obviously phenomenal, but it's been done a bunch of other times. There were times this season where it looked like we could win 108-110 games, something truly extraordinary. But then you clinch the division, let off the gas for a bit, and all of a sudden you've lost four in a row. And then it's the last series of the season, and you don't really care that much, and you start Allan Winans and Dylan Dodd, and so you lose two of three to the Nationals. It's kind of striking how easy it is to fall off the pace.
