2023 MLB Draft Thread

Round 10, Pick 309 - Pier-Olivier Boucher, OF, Southern Illinois Carbondale

Boucher went the JUCO route out of high school and went to Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Southern Illinois University where he earned 2023 All Missouri Valley Conference Second Team honors as he lead the Salukis in batting average (.335), hits (77), runs scored (46), slug % (.619), and stolen bases (19-22).

Boucher didn't face the best competition, but he excelled in the batter's box as he had a career batting average of .331 at SIU with 25 homers and 76 RBI. In two seasons with the Salukis, he only made six errors.

Not much footage of this kid, but from little I saw I liked. Seems to have above average power but with an elevated K Rate.

Decent wrap up of the picks so far can be found here: https://www.batterypower.com/2023/7...p-isaiah-drake-sabin-ceballos-garrett-baumann

Not much analysis on Day 3 players on mlb.com

Just certain players here and there…the only “future” Braves player listed

Pick 25 (429th overall), Braves: Mitch Farris, LHP, Wingate (N.C.) University (unranked)

The 6-foot-2 southpaw led Division II pitchers in strikeouts (127), WHIP (0.62) and batting average against (.128) while ranking second in ERA (1.21) over 89 innings. He operates in the upper 80s with his heater but shows good feel for a low-80s changeup and 73-75 mph breaking ball.

And yeah Battery Power did have some decent writeups on Day 2 players

More stuff on Mitch Farris

per Wayne Cavadi on Twitter

Only four #D2baseball players have gone in the #MLBDraft and TWO are from @WU_Bulldogs Mitch Farris off the board to the Atlanta Braves! You got a good one #Braves Country. One of my filthiest pitchers in DII this year.

Looks like we’re only going to sign two high schoolers.

Gotta assume Drake is a big overslot

Little something on the Braves 17th rd pick Kade Kern per @jeffMLBdraft on Twitter

Got to think Kade Kern has to cost more than slot, but maybe not. Lots of tools across the board, good power, just hasn't seen it all translate in game. There is some serious upside and potential growth in Kern who has speed and power. Great Pick in the 17th

Did we just draft Chuck James II?

From FG:
It was a huge coup for the Braves to get Waldrep in the back third of the first round. I consider him the second-best pitcher in the entire draft and a Top 100 prospect. The rest of the Braves’ first day doesn’t look great. They took two guys I have projected as relievers in Hackenberg (who had a nearly 6.00 ERA this year) and Kuehler (who struggled late in the year). Hackenberg has a key Braves prospect attribute, though: breaking ball command. Atlanta has had success augmenting prospects for the better, especially when they have this skill already on board when they’re acquired.

They put Waldrep in the top 100, and as a 50 Fv prospect

Waldrep is one of those that if he can refine his fastball command he has ace potential. Been awhile since we’ve had a 1st round pick to be excited about.

Been away from the computer for a couple of days. Interesting picks. Curious to see how the Braves play with the slot gymnastics. Braun, Gowens, and Boucher don't have any leverage (unless there are COVID dynamics that would give them another year of college eligibility). Unlike the past few drafts, there doesn't seem to be any obvious post-Round 10 guys who would require going significantly over slot to sign. Have to sign all the guys from the first ten rounds or lose the slot money, so my guess is they have a pretty-much agreed upon number with all of those guys.

Neither here nor there opinion wise of this draft. About 3 picks I like, the rest...wait and see. If Hurston turns out to be what I'm thinking he might, I'll be ok with this draft. A few darts may even pan out. This was truly a wait and see draft.

His nickname needs to be Bobby and his jersey number in Spring Training should be H2O.

RIP Civ, he'd be super worried about it.

clvclv had two things he seemed to worry about: losing slot money and the annual 40-man roster determination. Loved reading his stuff on those items. But, man, he knew just about every prospect on every high school and college team in North and South Carolina. He knew about guys like Hayden Deal and Bruce Zimmerman just to name a couple off the top of my head. I always enjoyed his post-draft wrap-up about guys who went here or there from his neck of the woods.
