Some of us advocated on behalf of a bill that would have greatly expedited hearings on asylum claims and given borders agents the power to make preliminary determinations of the chances a particular asylum claim would have of prevailing. Others preferred not to do anything on various grounds.
Be that as it may the dirty little secret is that Americans overwhelmingly benefit from illegal immigrations. No one is having a gun held to their heads when they hired undocumented workers to landscape their lawns or fix the roof over their head or as a nanny to their children. They do so cuz it is to their benefit. And same holds for many small businesses, especially restaurants, who hire undocumented immigrants as cooks, dishwashers and other staff on a large scale basis
A border bill that effectively would have done nothing. The POTUS had the power all along to make these changes, but chose to play politics instead. It backfired on him.
The second part is also false. Any benefits to the economy are off-set by the 200 billion we spend annually to support them, by the loss in taxes many of them do not pay, by the housing crisis they are partly responsible for creating, etc. It's a liberal myth that illegals only do the jobs that Americans don't want to do. The truth is, illegals are willing to do those jobs for less money, while the companies benefit from not having to pay payroll taxes on those employees. It further serves to throttle wage increases as well.
