My mother was close friends with the president's wife (the dude who got overthrown). It's a small place so that's not as impressive as it sounds. Everyone knows everyone else. My mother tells a story where the dude who would later overthrow the president drove her to the hospital when she went into labor with her first child (me).

Later the president's wife/ex-wife also moved to Florida. She has dementia now and is living in some sort of assisted living facility there. She and my mother hatched up a plan when I was young where I was supposed to marry her daughter. But fortunately that never came to fruition.

It is a crazy little place.

A few people died in the coup. And they actually went to the trouble of assassinating a political opponent in London. But mostly they expropriated people's property. A lot of people left. I was in my early teens. Old enough to understand what was going on. Some uncles and cousins stayed behind and rode out the storm. It is still a strangely divided society because of those events in the 1970s. People chose sides and haven't forgotten.
