2024 Minor League Thread

Do we have any examples of the Braves fixing launch angle issues with a player?

I can’t think of any, but that might just mean they already fixed the issues before I heard of the prospect.

In the lower levels I've not been thoroughly impressed by a lot of the instruction I've seen. Yeah..I know...who the hell am I? Nevertheless, I've seen tinkering with the gradual plane of a swing to increase loft (Tavarez comes to mind), but they were also dealing with contact issues and correcting his stance. When he connects, it's loud. Not that he's a stud now.

I've seen Baldwin and Alvarez who are natural hitters with compact swings adjust through mechanical things. To En's point, from FCL to Rome, there is a hitting philosophy that is lost on me. Very little patience and some of those swings are the worst you'll ever see. Conversely, Rome was where many of the adjustments began to take shape (when they were low A). I guess it's Augusta now...but ew.

I'm sure the Braves instructors and coaches are preaching contact first. You can't get loft if you can't hit the ball. Maybe that's the first step I'm missing.

That what happens youngster. Us old heads know...

One of the advantages of being old is that one remembers Bob Didier, Hal King, Johnny Oates, Vic Correll, Biff Pocoroba, etc. But then you realize it's not an advantage at all because you had to watch them play.

Take it easy on Greg Olson. Great prep and college player up here in the North Country. Also, he informed the Braves about Kerry Ligtenberg who was pitching for the independent league team Olson was managing. Braves acquired Ligtenberg from the Minneapolis Loons for a bunch of baseball equipment.

So, many of the minor league seasons are coming to an end soon (or already have in the case of the FCL). I haven't watched any of our lower level prospects, but I do try to scoreboard watch a couple times a week and see how our guys are doing, along with looking for prospect updates from the guys at Battery Power, who overall do a solid job.

That being said there are 4 guys who stand out based on performance and overall scouting reports. They are on my watch list heading into next season.

Jon Gil, SS. Age 18. Bats: RH - Had a nice season in the FCL. Not much power but a good display of plate discipline with a BB rate of 13% and a K rate of only 16%. Scouting reports imply he has 80 grade speed and is a good defender at both SS and 3b.

Junior Garcia, OF. Turned 19 on July 13th. Bats: LH - Our best hitter in the FCL by a decent margin, leading the team in every triple crown category (minimum 50 ABs). Also swiped 12 bags, implying he has some athleticism. Battery did decent write up on him here: https://www.batterypower.com/2024/7...op-30-ian-mejia-nick-montgomery-junior-garcia

Carlos Monteverde, OF. Age 18. Bats LH - I can't find much info on scouting reports other than what was reported when he made him our 2nd highest signing of the 2023 international class. He hasn't shown much power yet, but he's walked just as much as he has struck out this season between 2 leagues. It seems like he hasn't found a home defensively yet as he has spent an equal amount of time at 1b, LF, and RF this year, but his reported size (6'1, 177) wouldn't suggest he is unathletic.

Didier Fuentes, RHP. Age 19. - Having one of the best seasons of any SP in our system. 2.96 ERA. 11.7 K-rate, 2.5 BB rate. Scouting reports say he sits 93-95 and pairs good command with very good 2 pitch mix (FA and SL) and a developing change up. I've seen some footage of him and there is definitely something here, imo. Should be a fun one to watch in 2025 and if continues to develop he could fly up the prospect rankings.

We have alot of intriguing prospects and especially after having a good draft class this year and the international guys we signed. Cant wait to see what it looks like a year from now.
