You're missing the point.you can literally say that about any player signed. The fact is, the Japan market is a hot bed of money and most likely any contract signed will recoup that money within a few years of him signing. They love their stars and will buy a crap ton of merc that the team would get a chunk of. Of course there is risk.. but every player has risk.. nature of the beast.
That said, I don't see him signing with a lesser market team.. it will be west coast or NY/Chicago team.

I am simply pointing out that is only true if he's good.
Not only that, but I don't know that I would say Yu Darvish has been wildly popular, despite being a Cy Young caliber pitcher for a good chunk of his career. So I don't think it's a given that the contract will "pay for itself" even if he is successful.
