In all honesty the only reason Yamamoto is as popular as he is is bc of Ohtani and playing for the Dodgers. If he were on another team there wouldn't be as big of a following. I trust the scouting department so if they go that route then I'm on board. I just think they'll want a more proven MLB pitcher.

He will start to generate the additional revenue before he proves to be good or not.

He is a reasonable gamble for a team that needs an impact SP.

Darvish was a huge deal his first few seasons.

What is a "good amount" of revenue? Enough to compensate for even half of the contract? I find that extremely unlikely. Especially 30 years ago when the internet was barely a thing.

There isn't anything particularly special about Japanese players in general. The ones that have had huge Japanese followings have been legitimate MLB stars. And that isn't something that is somehow exclusive to the Japanese players. Good/popular American players tend to generate a lot of additional revenue as well.

That's certainly debatable as to whether or not that revenue is significant or not.

Ohtani is really the only Asian player we have heard about generating a ton of additonal revenue, beyond what is typical for a major league star. Maybe there was some chirping about Ichiro and Matsui back in their heydays. But Ohtani is primarily the only one we hear about now. However, he is the best baseball player on the planet, so comparing him to other Asian players seems silly.

Yes, Imai is a reasonable gamble as a 27 year old starting pitcher that has MOR potential (or better). I was only arguing against the point that the additional revenue might pay for the contract itself, because again, that only applies if he is good.

Valdez is a consistent 4 WAR starter. I didn’t realize until this offseason just how good he has been the last four years. That said, he’s 32 and a possible prick. I have no idea what $$ I’d be comfortable with while giving up a pick, honestly. He’s a tricky one.

Yeah I’d love to see actual data on what these guys generate. I’m far from convinced a guy like Imai would generate anything significant, especially before throwing a pitch. But I’d love to see data if there is any.
