2025-2026 offseason thread

Not my money so I don't care. 1 year deals, even in an overpay, rarely hurt teams much.
Except the money the Braves have available to spend is not infinite. Optimistically, we have 100 million to spend this off-season. It's probably a good bit less, but we'll call it that for argument's sake.

Spending 40% of that budget on a 36 year old declining MOR pitcher probably isn't the most efficient use of those dollars.

Of all the Braves options for SP, the one most likely to start the season as a healthy and above average pitcher is Sale. Think about what that statement means. The guy who just broke a rib during a slow motion dive on grass and is a sneeze away from a back injury is the MOST LIKELY SP to be healthy at the start of the year and be above average.

Strider is likely cooked as anything more than a backend guy.

Schwelly is coming back from a broken elbow...literally broken.

Holmes is almost certainly just delaying TJS.

AJSS is recovering from TJS.

Lopez may be cooked, and even if he isn't should probably be in the BP.

Waldrep looked good, but is a prime candidate for a sophomore slump.

Everyone else is so terrible folks are arguing if they are a #5 or a AAAA guy.

Even if the Braves do get Gray, the rotation is in no way "fixed". AA probably needs 2 legit MLB SPs, and even that may not be enough to contend for a title.
It may not be fixed, but the staff is done after AA gets 1. He may have just got him off the waiver wire

My prediction...
Kim on a 3-year deal

Zac gallen - down season, but been much better in 2nd half, so AA likes the value

Iggy - I like this move.

Helsley or Phil maton

Lane Thomas - good value after an injured season

Re-sign sale.
Extend drake

There’s no way a sane person claims Manoah fixes the rotation that is already completely full of question marks.

AA needs actual MLB pitchers who can actually start games and actually get outs.
You have more confidence in AA than me that he gets more than 1 starter

We definitely need a high end SP and not just some guy, another big bat to replace Ozuna that is more versatile, a SS if Kim leaves, a back end BP guy (maybe 2), and higher end depth pieces. AA has a big list and putting 40% of the money towards Gray would be foolish.

Cease 25 per (6/125)
Bellinger 25 per (5/100) not sure if that will do it
Resign Kim 15 per (3/45)
Resign Iggy 15 (2/30)
Castro at utility 8 (2/16)

That's 88 and fills most of the holes we have with quality guys. JR Ritchie will no doubt be a quality arm that's ready next year so he will be a quality depth piece when somebody goes down.

Cease will probably sign a Borass special like Bellinger before taking that contract. Something like 3 years 90 million with 40 mill the first year then he can opt out or get 30 mill in 2027 then he can opt out or make 20 mill in 2028. Bellinger I am warming up to but it feels like the option is to overpay for his 110-120 RC bat or end up with giving at bats to guys found on the trash heap. The Yankees OF might be full so if they arent bidding maybe it wont be too bad. 3 years for Kim is insane. He is not a long term SS option. If we get 1 decent year out of him we should be happy. Iggy for 2 years also insane. He is smoke and mirrors at this point. The thought of him closing playoff games in the future gives me nightmares. If he wanted to come back on a deal we could afford to cut him if he sucks I am cool with it. 15 million or 2 years is masochism. As for Castro I think the Twins sent the wrong Castro to the Cubs because he is just not the same player. Guys that spent their whole careers with 1 team. and fall off a cliff in a new environment scare me.

I get the sense the Braves are going to be looking at short term rotation options like Bieber but I think looking at what we need is the wrong way to look at it. I want to create a surplus in the rotation we can later leverage later. Holmes/Lopez/Strider should all start the year in the pen. All 3 can be elite in that role. Lopez and Strider we need to limit their innings to keep them fresh for a playoff run. Fuentes and Ritchie I think could be rotation options in the second half. AJSS should be making rehab starts by the all star break. Thats 5 legit options for depth. On the flip side I think we have several prospects who are maybe half a season away from helping the pen. Lara, Burkhalter, Braun, etc. So hopefully as we transition Strider or Lopez into the rotation we got someone to take their place. I would like to see us sign one long term deal and one 1 year deal. Something like Bieber and Suarez. Then hopefully we can deal from a position of strength at the trade deadline. I might shop Waldrep. Young pitching with lots of service time is the most valuable asset. Maybe we trade Bieber, maybe we trade Strider or Lopez at some point if the rotation is full.

If Kim hits the FA market he will get 2-4 years no doubt. Iglesias has been pretty legit since the break and was last year also. He'll be a year older so I get it but him at 2 years won't kill us but I'd be fine with Devin Williams to even though he's been terrible in NY. Nobody is giving Cease 30-40 per even on a short deal. Bc if Cease takes a 1 year deal and craps the bed then he's not getting another shot at a long term deal. This is his chance to cash in and I think 5-6 years at 25 per is fair maybe pushing it to 27 but it won't be more than that. No thanks on Bieber. The team needs to focus on guys that haven't been on the DL often bc we already have plenty of those guys. I think we are gonna be pretty surprised at how much fat AA cuts this offseason.

Was just reading an article on MLBTradeRumors about Ron Washington and if he's coming back to coach the Angels next year. An interesting thought I hadn't considered was brought up, in that teams may be hesitant to bring on a new manager next year because of the impending lockout in the year following, and it being unknown what the landscape will look like at that point. Wonder if this will impact the Braves decision with Snitker at all.

He isnt done. Probably more mid rotation than top of the rotation now. I think he can still be elite in the pen.
Even if he is what he was he was in 2025, you’re looking at a 1.5 fwar pitcher—but I definitely think he will improve in 2026. If he doesn’t get back to elite status, that really sucks, but a ~3.0 fwar mid-rotation starter at his salaries will still represent surplus value.
