2025-2026 offseason thread

Didn't AA say they only want to go after someone who could start a playoff game. Unless he takes a step forward in his development that ain't Cabrera.
There are only a few of those you could get in trade. Peralta and Ryan. I'd rather give up the extra to get Joe Ryan and the extra year of control if it means staying away for the high end FA SP left.

I would too. I honestly think they don't make any big moves for the rotation until the trade deadline.

If AA doesn’t get another SP nobody is allowed to act surprised, or use “pitchers are risky” as an excuse when Elder starts 30 games again due to injuries to the most injury prone rotation among all contenders.

AA is a SP away from an above average, and maybe even good, off season. He needs to finish the job.

Cabrera has 3 years left so he would have been a good target. #1 and #11 Cubs prospects. Feels light
FG doesn't feel as high on Caissia as other sites. He has legitimate 30+ homer power, but his contact rates are mediocre to go along with 29% k rate. He also can't hit lefties and his defensive reports suggest he's relegated to a corner OF position, though he does have 60 grade arm. That feels like a Joc Pederson clone at best, unless he can reduce the K rate and hit lefties at a decent clip.

Hernandez feels like the Cubs version of Perdomo, only older. Talented international prospect with a lot of raw talent, but he has yet to really show anything stateside.

De Leon has hit well so far to be as young as he is, but he's not on any top prospect lists I can find and he's got a k rate over 30%. I can't find much info on him from the scouting world other than he doesn't seem to have a defensive home yet, but he's currently projected as a 1b.

So yeah, the return for the Marlins seems super light. Cabrera isn't a star, but he seems like a solid MOR type with 3 years of control. I would have thought he would have brought a higher return given the SP market so far.

I doubt Elder even makes the team out of ST, unless someone else is hurt or he's in the BP as the mop up man. The more likely scenario is that he is traded or DFA'd.

Cabrera has a lot of talent and could certainly be a guy who takes a step forward. Luzardo was/is that guy too.

AA is at some point going to have to be bold and make a somewhat risky trade, or buy somewhat low and bet on a guy’s talent. The constant waiting for a perfect Sale-like deal will likely burn him again.

Marlins are just being run incredibly poor right now. I don't think Cabrera is anything more than a # 3, but that was worth more than what they got.

At the very least, they could have waited till the deadline when teams were desperate and hoped that he was pitching as good or better than last year.

This isn’t an endorsement or an indictment of the move itself, but Cabrera carries pretty significant injury risk. He’s had recurring right elbow issues, including a mid-July exit due to discomfort and a right elbow sprain in September that sidelined him for several weeks, which helps explain why the medicals reportedly took so much time.

There’s been widespread concern about his long-term elbow health and while TJ isn’t inevitable, teams clearly had questions. Given where the Marlins are competitively, it makes sense they chose to move him now rather than risk his value dropping further. You can debate the return, but it sounds like at least a few teams were hesitant because of the medicals.

I’m a bit higher on AA’s offseason than you are, but I agree with the general point. He went too damn long without prioritizing depth and it showed when injuries and underperformance forced scrapheap players into extended roles.

To his credit, he’s now addressed that pretty well on the bullpen and position-player side and the rotation is the last piece. Adding a legitimate top-end starter isn’t just about improving the front of the staff since it pushes everyone else down, lowers the workload on the back end and reduces how often you’re forced to dip into depth arms over a full season.

Ideally, it also gives you the option to move one of the current back-end starters into the bullpen, which helps protect the staff as a whole.

GET IT DONE, ALEX.
