2025-2026 offseason thread

Passan just said the Braves may be the best fit for Bichette bc they can move him to 2b after Albies deal is up.
This is sound logic, but I seriously doubt they give any FA $200M+.

But I'm in the group that thinks AA has much less to spend than we are all hoping, so maybe he has a ton of cash and can shop outside the bargain aisle.

Tonight at 6 EST is the deadline to set the 40-man for Rule 5 purposes. Mayo and Callis have Ian Mejia as the Braves "toughest" 40-man decision. I won't be upset if they don't protect him. I'm assuming Burkhalter will be added though.

The Braves nabbed Mejia as an 11th-round pick out of New Mexico State in 2022 and he’s coming off a very good year, spent almost entirely with Double-A Mississippi, in which he finished third in the Southern League in ERA (2.62) and WHIP (1.06). He’s also topped 120 innings in each of his three seasons, but he doesn’t miss a ton of bats and throws his slider more than his fringy fastball, giving him a lower ceiling.

Bichette is prettty young. He's probably the guy it would make most sense to sign if you were doing a premium free agent thing.

The bat still plays at second and you could probably have a whole late inning plan in place for a year. ... if the defense really bothered you.

Trent Grisham, Brandon Woodruff, Gleyber Torres and Shota Imanaga have all accepted the QO.
I’m surprised by Grisham. I’d think he’d have some decent offers. Career year where he played CF most of the year. Right before free agency, you’d think that would be a dream.

I dont think a QO'd player can be traded until June 15.
Incorrect.

You may be thinking about the penalty. The penalty for signing a QO player is removed after the following the draft if the player remains unsigned.

But it's usually pretty unlikely a team will trade away a guy that accepts a QO. If you're willing to offer them a QO, you generally want them on your team.

Doesn't Burkhalter have to go on? He just finished his fourth season after being drafted in 2022. I'm making the same assumption as you. Same draft as Mejia.

I haven't seen anything announced. Braves will probably wait until midnight to send out the press release.

Incorrect incorrect. With on caveat:

"Under the CBA, accepting the qualifying offer is akin to signing a major league free agent contract. That means Woodruff cannot be traded without his consent until June 15, 2026."

Passan said today that if Woodruff accepted the QO, the chances of Freddy Peralta being dealt would go way up.

Give me Freddy Peralta all day. I've laid out the potential cost before. Something along the lines of Ritchie, Nacho, and a prospect ranked in the 10-15 range should be roughly the cost to as acquire him. That roughly matches the value they received for Burnes 2 years ago, with a bit of a discount because Peralta isn't as good as Burnes was.

Yeah, Burkhalter is Rule 5 eligible. Looks like the Braves decided not to protect him or anyone else. I suppose guys like Mejia and Burkhalter aren't that different in value than Carson Ragsdale (who has two MiLB option years remaining).

Yep. I believe that got moved back. It used to be mid-May IIRC.
