2025-2026 offseason thread

So apparently Atlanta is on Seager’s no trade list
Just means if we want him we have to give him a little sweetener for him to waive it.

Players do this with contending teams that might be a fit in order to get a little extra cash.

Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but does make it a little more complicated

They also do that with teams they have no interest playing for. We’d probably be looking for Texas to pay down on his contract to begin with so I’m not sure what kind of sweetener we’d be throwing in.

Not saying it’s not the case, I just really doubt seager is opposed to playing in Atlanta.

After the Dubon and Iggy acquisitions the payroll sits at $209M with holes at OF/DH, SP, and a couple bench and BP slots. The luxury number can likely be ignored.

Based on this, we’re realistically talking about roughly $25M–$45M to work with, assuming they keep around $10M set aside for the trade deadline. So, with the payroll almost certain to clear the $244M tier-one threshold and potentially push up toward the $264M second tier, we’re likely looking at adding a mid-rotation starter, an OF/DH bat and a bullpen arm, with the option to fill one of those needs via trade instead of free agency.

Can they just surprise us and hit $300 MM? That could buy 2 really nice bats or a bat and a #2 type SP. Or maybe (the deal with Texas for Seager + Degrom - Murphy) + Bellinger. Gotta dream.

Why would you ignore the luxury tax number. I’d think that’s more important than the actual payroll number
My pure speculation is that the only reason we cared about the luxury number before was due to nature of all the extensions. Early on those extensions were being paid such that the actual payroll was much lower than the luxury tax number associated with those contracts. So the penalties paid by the Braves were just another expense added to the actual payroll. Now that the luxury tax hit for those contracts are less than the actual payroll, the Braves are unlikely to come close to even the lowest tier.

I'm estimating the final payroll will be $230M-$250M, which will lead to a luxury tax number below the first tier of $244M.

The Wentz deal puts the Braves right around $210M. I'm guessing AA has at most $40M left to spend, and at least $20M.

I don't see a path for adding a legit SS, OF/DH and SP.
