2025-2026 offseason thread

Or how about actually give generic GM answers? I’ve never heard a GM like to talk so much about deals he almost made like AA after he’s unsuccessful in adding a significant piece.
This. He says it, he opens himself up to what should be an obvious follow-up. No one is asking for specifics. In general, what is preventing you from closing if you say it isn’t money?

Lmao. No. Shouldn't we want one every year? 10 years..I gotta mull that over 😂😂😂
I understand wanting one every year but it’s not super realistic. I mean before 2021 we hadn’t won a WS since 1995. So what 26 years? And it’s not like we weren’t making the playoffs during most of that time either.

I mean if AA is gonna sign someone at this point I think it has to be Giolito. There’s nobody else out there that you’d trust to start a playoff game
Giolito or Littell as far as free agents and that's just for insurance and to hopefully allow for Holmes to be in the pen (he's not good the second time through the order). At this point, "playoff starter" could only come through trade. AA shouldn't be assuming he has the luxury of being picky and only getting a "playoff starter." It's far from a guarantee this team will be in the playoffs.

Ok but there’s already a lot of options for a 5th starter

Elder
Wentz
Perez
Ritchie
Fuentes
Waldrep

If we’re looking for more depth it needs to be for the top spots in the rotation.

Elder and Waldrep are the only two that you can realistically say can provide quality innings andeven that is a shaky reality. The rest are quad A and unproven rookies. That is a horrible way to start a season for someone wanting to contend.

That isn’t even addressing the fact that you also plan on using a guy who finished the season with shoulder issues and another guy who finished the season with a partial tear. Both as starters. Pure brilliance if you ask me.

Waldrep will hopefully build on what he did last season. Elder will only ever be Elder. Maybe he could be packaged with Holmes in a lot of games. Fuentes is not going to be ready. Ritchie probably not right away. Wentz is not good. Perez...29 other teams could have signed him to a major league deal and didn't. I'd rather not have yet another season of roulette where 20 different guys are starting games.

What I’m saying is adding more to the 5th starter pile isn’t likely to help us. What we need is someone who can start the season as a 3 4 or 5 but legitimately move up the rotation as injuries occur and be capable of making a playoff start.

That ship is sailed. Gio is the only guy left with upside and that is not much. It is either go into battle with what we have and hope Holmes and Lopez don’t break or grab a couple of scrap heaps and push those two to the pen to help shorten games and hope to hold on until guys get healthy.

Either way this was a fail by AA.

I blast AA all the time, but calling an offseason a fail before one ST game seems a little quick on the trigger.

I didn’t say the season was a fail. But going into the season on hopes and dreams seems like lack of a plain 3 starters finished the season with significant injuries. Not to address the rotation is a fail no matter how the season shakes out.

My hope is that he was close on a deal and would rather see how things look after spring training than pay the price now. Things could be much worse than having Elder, Waldrep, and some of the reclamation projects and prospects around for depth, though I would prefer to have both of those guys in the rotation and Holmes and Lopez in the bullpen.

My fear is that he’s gun shy after being burned so badly in the Contreras/Murphy trade.
If he’s gun shy after making a trade that everyone knew was dumb before it happened then I’m not sure what to tell him.

I think he probably knows more about SS#2 than us. I figure he plans on getting him back sooner than later
