The Braves offered more money to Freddie than they gave Olson ($28m compared to $21m AAV)

Freddie took less money to go to LA.

It’s about time folks get over that.

Braves final offer was 5/140. He signed with the Dodgers for 6/162, with 57 deferred, giving a real value of about 148. So while the contract was larger, he will take home less due to higher taxes in CA.

Freeman then fired his agent for the debacle. I suspect he would have taken 5/140 from the Braves, but his agent allowed AA's deadline to expire, and once AA moved onto Olson the Dodgers were his only choice.

It's very hard to lay blame on AA for Freeman not being a Brave. I do not consider that series of moves a failure on his part, though I still question the extension.

4 years $88m remaining when inferior players like Naylor and Alonso are making more money. AA could trade Olson tomorrow and get a bigger prospect haul than he gave up to acquire him.

In the context of folks (rightly) criticizing AA for not having an acceptable backup plan for Swanson and Fried. He deserves a lot of credit for the Olson pivot.

If we don't make the playoffs this year, AA has gotta be fired. You can't run a top 6-7 payroll and miss the playoffs 2 straight seasons.

Well we couldn't have easily signed Freddie for that because he refused the deal.

I'm not mad at all about missing playoffs last year. It's not realistically something that was in his control.

I'm not sure he really had the ability to sign two mid rotation or better starters either.

And I like the other signings he made this offseason. Generally speaking his free agent signings have all been reasonably considered and reasonably successful.

Probably he has to make a trade at some point for pitching.

Unfortunately it does seem like the most likely culprit this time around. But if that is keeping us from signing a useful piece like Littell for $10 mil or less, I question whether whatever they come up with for tv will be sustainable for the season. If AA was really told to kill spending because of that, why was he allowed to sign Kinley for $6 million in mid-January when we had just as many different relief options as starting pitching options?

Incorrect. Freddie was holding out for 6 years. We gave 6 years to Olson at roughly the same AAV we had offered to Freddie. If we had offered 6/160 to Freeman, he'd be here now.

Sorry I was off on the years. Olson extension was 8/168. Even if total AAV wasn't similar, the total number was easily better than we offered Freeman.

Freddie and his agent certainly hold some blame. But AA holding firm on 5 years and then committing more money (and prospects) to Olson was insanely dumb.

We played a little hardball at first. Chipper would have never gotten that treatment. Freeman was the franchise. Give him a little more than you want right away.
