I believe MLB approved the bats. There are rules on bats, but I think the restrictions apply more to the extension of the barrel towards the knob as opposed to the end. Not sure on that. I think this design would be a "legal" corked bat to some extent as bat speed would increase a bit. Curious to see the effect on the ball if it is hit off the end of a bat like this.

I used to play fast-pitch softball in the pre-aluminum bat era and I sometimes used a "bottle bat" that pretty much resembled a bottle. Here's a pic.

Fast-pitch operates on a whole different realm than either baseball, slow-pitch softball, or modified-pitch softball. Pitcher is right on top of you and there is a lot of ball movement, so any kind of contact is key. Not a lot of guys generate significant power, so it's small ball all the time.
