2025 Spring Training Thread

My recollection is that Allen is very good defensively. Also, his MLB track record is not good, but it is not a very big sample, and he was considered a top prospect.

He wouldn’t be the first guy to take a couple of years to figure out MLB.

I would like to see them give him a shot. Lots of guys do well in ST, but can’t carry it into the season. I would like to see him get enough of a shot to find out if his ST performance will translate.

His defense has regressed significantly since he was called up. His bat has always been anemic. I feel pretty confident he won't be hitting .400 in the regular season.

Has it? I’ve always been under the impression he’s still a fairly elite fielder. I haven’t looked at this defensive metrics lately but I also don’t put too much stock in defensive metrics… they all have issues

OAA had him at +9 in 2022 +1 in 2023 and -1 in 2024

I agree. I think they all have warts but can paint an ok image.

It’s only ST, but the guys who hit last year (Ozuna, Riley, Harris post-injury) are hitting. And the ones who didn’t (Albies, Kelenic, Murphy, Arcia) are not. Olson was terrible in the first half last year, but was great the 2nd half, and overall really good. So, he’s the outlier here.

Nobody suggested he would hit .400 in the season. Just that we ought to see if this is a hot streak, or if he has figured something out. Better than Arcia with solid defense would be a win.

Not a lot of risk to find out. If he hits like Arcia, or has forgotten how to play defense, then… so be it.

Albies with another grounder to 1B. If he can get a little closer to the plate maybe he can pull them all foul and never get out. Or maybe he can put his back foot in the RH batter box so he is straddling the plate, and never even let the pitch get past the plate.

Once again- I’m not sure how this is allowed to happen

That's the thing. The likely outcome is he doesn't hit or field as well as Arcia in the regular season. Allen is having a good ST because he's hitting a lot of singles. If he goes back to hitting .200 in the regular season he hasn't shown the power or on base skills to overcome that.
